Imagine being such a POS that you want the HOA to remove a veteran's wheelchair ramp.

You're goddamn right I do. The fact of the matter is that even if you bought a house operating under a reasonable HOA, there is no guarantee that it will stay reasonable. You really think it's right to fine someone $1000 a day because they put up new shutters that weren't approved? That's just one of the numerous examples of HOA's run amok you can find.
You voted for it.

There was nothing in their bylaws against wheelchair ramps. They used the "unsightly" jargon to try and hide behind. Not to mention they violated the ADA.
How does a veteran having a wheelchair ramp on his property negatively affect you?

Most people who love HOA's expect cookie cutter manicured yards with zero personality.
They love HOAs because they can piss on their neighbors individual choices.

Freedom of association. Gonna be hard to get around the pesky first amendment. If some people want to buy some land, then agree to incorporate and set a bunch of rules for that land, they can run it that way if they want. Nobody forces you to join.
I wouldn't want to live in one but I really don't want to tell people how they can run their property if it is within the rules of their legal jurisdiction.

That is the way buying a house anywhere works. You think you can guarantee the neighborhood you live in stays the same. You think you can guarantee the people are not going to vote for some insane laws.

I love my HOA. Everyone’s yards are always in good shape, sidewalks/driveways are pressure washed, nothing junky or trashy looking. The whole neighborhood stays looking nice.
You can always tell a neighborhood with no HOA by the unkept yards.

If you’re unhappy with your HOA, perhaps you and a few like minded neighbors should run for your HOA’s board the next time elections come up

This $3 million home is for sale in Key West. No HOA. You think it is trashy?

You live in fantasy land. Power breeds corruption.
I love that one of the old hags that was arrested is named Myriam. That's worse than a Karen. This likely goes on in the majority of HOAs.

quote:I’ve lived in 3 HOA neighborhoods. The worst issue I’ve had with any of my HOA’s is that they gave my a warning because I used to leave my trash cans at the top of my driveway by the garage door and they sent me a warning letter saying the trash cans couldn’t be visible from the street when it wasn’t garbage pickup day.
This likely goes on in the majority of HOAs.
I haven’t had issues with my HOA’s because I keep up my property, mow my yard, and don’t do trashy things. My parents and sister live in HOA neighborhoods nearby and don’t have issues with theirs either.
You’re looking up the most extreme examples of shitty HOAs and trying to make it seem like all HOAs suck which is false. Yeah, you have some shitty run HOAs, but most are run just fine.

What does a single random house have to do with what I said? Houses aren’t incapable of having a nice yard without an HOA.

Condo Associations do all the landscaping, trash, and upkeep of any amenities. Even HOAs are pretty much exclusive to subdivisions/neighborhoods that usually have a playground/community pool/golf course/other amenties. I don't think it's unreasonable for everyone that lives there to have to chip in for the upkeep of those. After all you choose to live there, you can always buy land and build or find somewhere where there isn't an HOA if you don't agree with their terms, you aren't forced to live there.
So idk about "abolish" but I do think there are HOAs that take it too far. Like you can't have your boat/RV visible, that kind of stuff. But those kind of things are a local level thing, I don't think federal or even state government should be involved in it. If you feel a certain way then maybe attend some HOA meetings and let them know how you feel? It's not like every HOA is the same

You said you can tell which neighborhoods don't have an HOA because the yards are unkept. That is false. Most all homes located in downtown areas of cities have no HOA and are maintained very well. These are high value properties in the cases of cities like Orlando. Meanwhile you've got HOA neighborhoods in the Lockhart and Pine Hills area of Orlando that are absolute slums.

Only way to limit rentals.

Sure, some HOAs are better than others. For the most part, HOA neighborhoods are generally going to have nicer yards and kept up better than neighborhoods without them, unless you’re in a higher than average income area of course.
I live in a small neighborhood in St. George (south Baton Rouge) and our HOA does awesome. One weekend we had what seemed like half the neighborhood pressure washing their driveways because we all got notices. Looks so much better now.
