Also, years later my mother whispered to me in her own kitchen that Jimmah was the reason she voted GOP the first time in her life. She further stated that he was the dumbest president that ever lived

Correct. The students were more a Soviet backed faction. Mullahs took the lead afterwards

Carter had no business being President but he’s probably one of the more moral Men to ever hold the office. Some of the comments about him on here are too below the belt.
I think the threads a good discussion - just not some of the comments.

Give me a break.
He is a thin skinned attention seeker. Sunday school teaching gives him a little ego stroke. No doubt he is Christian but he is a politician.
How can anyone say this guy is "more moral" than this other guy?

The funny thing is that his political instincts were reasonably-effective in Georgia
Georgia was a yellow dog Dem state back then... essentially 1 party state and he was presceded by Lester Maddox who took all the arrows in regards to integration. He did try to build bridges between Herman Talmage wing of the party and the Atlanta wing but that was never gonna work.

that is not true at all.
Carter got very little accomplished.
LBJ on the other hand gave us 50,000 troops dead in a war he didn't think he could win but would not stop it and created generations of poor who know only entitlements as a way to live with his War on Poverty.
LBJ is the worst since FDR and that is not even close.
Every once in a while when I think I have nothing in common with someone they put my thoughts to ink and remind me we all have something we can agree on.

I don't see how anyone can say anything Obama or Carter did was worse than the Viet Nam war and the Great Society and the street riots of the late sixties.
LBJ is the worst and it is not even close.

Entire generations of Persian women and girls are being abused today thanks to Jimmy Carter.
The reckless appeasement of Jimmy Carter is responsible for untold misery, squalor, lives lost, a destabilized region, terrorism being exported abroad, a lost ally and an entire beautiful culture lost to barbaric bordes stuck in the stone ages.
When he swallowed the snake oil from the Khomenis, he created an enemy of the United States of America.

To be fair, and don’t get me wrong, Jimmy Carter was the 2nd most FAILED President behind Hussein, but in the late ‘70’s the U.S. military was no where near as poised or capable of deploying and projecting power and thinking so quickly as it is now.
The U.S. was trying to just hold serve in West Germany and lead NATO back then, and be able to ship assets to Europe in the event of a hypothetical Warsaw Pact (Soviet) attack.
We were also just holding serve in Korea as well. The military of the mid to late ‘70’s was not the same quality it is today, on so many levels.
Carter was also weak on foreign policy/national security, and the disarray and quality of our military post Vietnam did not start getting way better until the mid ‘80’s under Reagan.
The “To be fair” part of my post is that Carter didn’t have a ton of non-risky options then to meet force with force.

Cold War USSR was enemy number 1. Getting militarily involved in Iran would be foolish at best and catastrophic at worst.

Carter gave the Iranians a shite load of money to release them. He was stupid because there was no way Iran was going to keep them when Regan took office. The old man had made it clear he wasn't going to put up with it. He would have turned that place into a piece of glass.
You have no idea how close we were. We flew sorties to Tehran and informed them the first wave was conventional, the second would be nuclear. We dont give to shats about a few hostages, but no one will fck with the United States...and they suddenly acquiesed....imagine that.

Nice man but didn't have the killer instinct to be a great president

How can that be true? Reagan had been President for all of like seven minutes when the hostages were let go.
Posted on 1/5/20 at 8:34 pm to Rebel
I remember those days well. I was a student at UF, we rented a house from an Iranian family. Then the hostage situation happened. I had to put a sign in the front yard that the Iranians no longer live here to keep from being burned out.
