Would we be where we are today?

Apathy is not an effective foreign policy.

God Bless Donald Trump!

Kohmeini might have been very short lived. Truly a missed opportunity. Iran could have been a free people.

Amazing isn't it how a single moment in time has a lasting effect on history forty years later? No doubt Carter's mishandling of the hostage crisis put him out to pasture, otherwise he could have possible been a two term president. Same with the Dems impatience to elect a black man first instead of a woman. They only got eight years of rule instead of sixteen, thank God.

He actually tried to use the military to rescue the hostages, but it turned into a disaster.

Operation Eagle Claw

The poster above me makes reference to it.

Carter was not President material, plain and simple.

He was in over his head. The job was too big for him.

Lol. There will never be a draft. Not sure why we even mess with the selective service still.

Friendly reminder that Jimmy Carter once asked a 30 something Donald Trump for $5 million to help build his presidential library.

True story.

I'm not military and I don't know what our capabilities were at the time (like highly trained and equipped Navy Seals)but I don't remember there being a constant drum beat to go get them. I do remember Nightline was launched as a result and we got an update of the day's activities. It pretty much launched Ted Koppel beyond being just a reporter to an anchor. They would have the number of days held hostage on the screen almost constantly during the show. Carter was a Naval Academy grad but just didn't put people in positions to help him. It was an abomination of a presidency.

I had a friend, he’s dead now from skin cancer, that was in the marines at this time. He was on a ship as part of a MEU in the Persian Gulf. He told me that the word on his ship that they would see action shortly after Regan took office. They released the hostages on Inauguration Day so they never saw action.

That was a tough situation. I don't know what was the right call. The huge mistake was not pulling all embassy staff out well before it escalated to that point. The signs were there, they ignored them. Once the embassy was overtaken it was too late. Of course they tried a rescue mission but that was clusterfrick from the get go that till this day I believe was no more than a publicity stunt. Not true attempt to rescue them.

Man was a total embarrassment outside of Camp David accord. Very weak in how he managed affairs.

Was the last Democrat that I voted for.

No question the Persians had a right to be ticked about the Shah of Iran but for the love of whomever you don't give away one's keys to the kingdom.

Carter gave the Iranians a shite load of money to release them. He was stupid because there was no way Iran was going to keep them when Regan took office. The old man had made it clear he wasn't going to put up with it. He would have turned that place into a piece of glass.
