Just paid Jefferson County, AL $500 for the year for the privilege of driving on the roads that I paid for in a truck that I own.

The tags themselves cost that much? In Arkansas they're $28 (on average). I live in Sebastian County, they're dead on $28.

it's based on the value of your vehicle.

Don't live in a place that charges property taxes on your car. I kept my registration in LA when I lived in VA for that reason.

I think it's grouped with property tax. Mine is 900+ per year in AR when combined.

I thought Bama was good because they didn't have stupid brake tags/inspection stickers.

But you have to pay that much for a YEARLY vehicle registration???

That's why I asked for clarification, was the $500 for the renewal alone, or with property tax?

In the truck you already paid sales tax on when you purchased it.

Same principle applies to homeowners taxes. If you have to pay the government for something you already bought you don’t really own it you’re only renting the right from the government to use it because they would own it the moment you don’t pay.

Our tax structures are built on an unspoken assumption that the government has what equates to final ownership rights on our most valuable assets:

Rights of government over private property:
• Taxation (can seize if not paid).
• Eminent domain (taking for public use with just compensation).
• Police power (zoning, regulations, health/safety rules).
• Escheat (property reverts to the state if you die without heirs).

Another fun fact: modern upper middle class Americans pay almost as much in taxes as serfs did in medieval England. (Note: it varied somewhat from place to place as it does today and they paid ~30-40%).

It's based on the vehicle value. My car tag and the tag for our extra car combined was less than half of what my wife's tag was.

New car?

Yet another reason I only buy 8-10 year old Toyotas. I think I only pay $32/year for mine.

The tag itself is $24.50 I think. But you have to pay the property tax at the same time.

ETA - my '23 Accord was only a couple of hundred. Combined.

it is a sticker, it is yearly, and it's based on your vehicle's value. We have 3 cars in our household and paid around $790 for 2026 registration.

Newer SUV collegiate tag- $396
Older but nicer SUV collegiate tag- $309
15 year old beater personalized tag- $83

brake tags/inspection stickers.

unlike some states we do NOT need an inspection though which is nice. That was one thing I despised about Georgia is having to do that stupid arse emissions test every year.
