it's based on the value of your vehicle.
This, I thought I had an idea of what it would cost me when I went to get tags, but I was a little off.

Should not be charged by the value of the vehicle. If it's going to be variable, it should be by the weight of the vehicle.

The tags themselves cost that much? In Arkansas they're $28 (on average). I live in Sebastian County, they're dead on $28.

In Madison County Alabama the tag is $80 plus 15% of vehicle value times an ad valorem rate of .0335

That would be a $83,600 vehicle to require $500 tag fee.

Pearl River county MS does the same it’s a tax based on age and value paid yearly. An average new car is around $600 the first year cheapest it gets is around $100-150 after 10 years. Cost me $1500 to move into the county and transfer the vehicles and trailers I was in shock. Makes that brake tag and $60 registrations in LA look pretty damn good but at least my insurance savings more than offsets. I fear LA about to get the double whammy after getting rid of inspections
