Sounds like we need midnight basketball.

Part of the problem is that culture and standards have changed. Before the onus is just put on kids not performing, adults allowed it to happen - case in point - GLP-1. Ronnie Coleman said it best. "Everybody wants to be a body builder, but nobody wants to lift heavy arse weight."

We also need to accept that fact that some folks are just not meant for post-secondary education right out of high school for one reason or another and public schools should pivot to preparing people for life without training wheels. The world needs welders and plumbers as much as it needs engineers and doctors. Not everybody gets to be an astronaut and as a society, we should not lie to each other about it.

I've been walking around on this planet for a fist full of decades now, and the people that really want to learn will figure out how to get it done.

screen culture combined with materialism. a toxic mix. what percentage of the parents are literate, well read, can think critically, write in complete sentences? sadly, this is one aspect of a larger, deep moral bankruptcy in american society; dishonesty, lack of integrity, selfishness, coveting, greed rule the day.. and, these are in conflict with the idea of a well read, moral and just person, striving to be a good citizen. illiterate parents means illiterate kids. the cycle gets worse to the point we are today and tik tok culture. it's no longer cool to be smart.

as to what to do about it... invest dollars in teachers and schools, require a return to wide ranging reading lists, invest in adult education, etc etc. think this congress can do that? lolol.. too busy engaged in culture wars.

Make teachers give grades as EARNED. If they can't read or speak, that was an F in my day

Seriously, I blame the computer screen. It's not that the kids being talked about can't really read a book, it's that they won't. I'll bet that their writing skills are wanting as well. But their thumb dexterity is just fine.

You hold the standard and fail the student. Same way all of us learned.

The basis of the reading and writing and even math should be direct instruction. The limit is training of teachers, which is why I don't think we will see wide adoption for a good bit.

Segregate those who are unwilling to learn from those who are willing to learn. Place special needs or retarded kids in their very own special needs or retarded environment.

Utilize programs designed specifically for those who have trouble with traditional or normal environments. For those who do not want to adapt, drop them in the middle of the lake and tell them to learn how to swim to shore. If they refuse, well, you know the rest of that story. /s

Stop letting kids graduate 4th grade without being able to read and write at grade level.

All kids who are in school, can’t read, and are already above that grade level get sent to alternative schools that focus on getting them able to read and write proficiently before getting sent back to their regular schools.

If you fail 4th grade twice, you also get sent to alternative school.

Abolish public sector unions and the federal department of education which ties funding to graduation rates and disciplinary policies, both of which incentivize removing consequences from students.

No, I think the vast majority can't.

And I would agree.

And that's why they really can't.

I watched my brother and his wife give their kids tablets before they were two years old (because it entertained them and kept them out of their hair).

Long before they could read they could navigate a tablet. That has to affect your brain somehow.

Their oldest child I know is no scholar; I don't know about the younger two. But i wouldn't be surprised if the oldest was one of those kids who can't focus long enough to read a few paragraphs.

My son took Eng 1 & 2 so far... neither had them read a single book. Just excerpts and truncated articles.

This sounds good when you say it out loud.

But I think we'd both cringe when we saw the actual plan.

More dollars?

That's been the "solution" for decades now. We already spend more than most countries per student. It aint working.

Here's another major issue in hiring and employment.....the people who can't get through one or two sentences without cursing.

It feels like a lot of times, I'll be walking into a grocery store, post office, whatever....and you'll hear somebody on a phone like: "Frick her. Tell that b**** she don't want none of me."

And that's some 28 or 32-year old woman saying it. Not surprising when people can't get hired because you can't have somebody at a hotel front desk, car dealership, customer service counter doing that.

What the hell is going on with these teachers and parents in our schools?

Parents need to model reading for their kids. If kids never see their parents reading, they are internalizing that reading isn't important and isn't something that adults do.

I still read to my own children at night. We have books all over our house - baby book, kid books, young adult books and lots of adult nonfiction and ethnographies. They see me reading. We go to the library as a family. I also make them read for 20 minutes every day after school before they can turn on any devices.

Unfortunately, retention doesn't really improve outcomes. It actually increases the likelihood the retained student will drop out of high school.

So?

What’s the point of graduating illiterate kids?

Surprisingly, Mississippi and Louisiana have done a good job on that front.

From a hold back in 4th grade, WITH the current implementation strategies?

You really are dumb.

Like…legit stupid.
