People also forget that this is an area where the Democratic machine never has been broken.
It was friendly near home turf and adjacent to America's most prominent socialist politicians historically -- Wisconsin.
The 'Democratic Farm Labor' party is the hard left fusion of those forces that has dominated in state politics for generations. You add on turning on the spigot on immigration to thwart the Wisconsinization of the state, and that's how you still have a state that is so backwards politically.

When Regan won 49 states, he lost Minnesota.
