HOW are untold millions continuing to flow towards Grand Isle ??

Just since Ida, it looks like well over 150 MILLION parish, state and federal $ have been spent on a recreational fishing village of LESS than 1500 people ! Does mayor David C. have ALL the compromising pictures of EVERY local, state and federal official, not to mention those of Entergy ? Can anyone name another LA community that receives such generous attention after EVERY storm ??

Grand Isle benefits from two things IMO, romanticism and the lobbying to “save our coast”.

Should we rename it 150 Million Isle?

All the politicians need to keep Grand Isle around so they'll have a place to go dump their dead hookers.

Seems like after the last wipeout it would have been purchased by the government and used for wildlife.

I am glad the coast is getting the attention and money it finally deserves. It needs more and the USACE is largely to blame.
Hopefully, we get some attention on the Dead Zone and all the pollution in the MS River.

Ed O needs a fish camp locale too

I can name one....New Orleans.
The New Orleans Convention Center received $220 MILLION in FEMA PA funds due to Covid. How can that be?
Quit whining about saving the Louisiana coast. Every inch of the three miles out pays oil royalties. Want to bitch? Ask why Louisiana only gets 3 miles out when others get 10 miles out in royalties.
You are asking the wrong questions.

Because former politicians like Huey P Long and Edwin Edwards were too busy fleecing the state instead of building it.

To be fair, with the combination of O&G and recreation taxes Grand Ilse probably pulls a lot of its own weight.

Yeah, to solve this the COE and EPA needs to some how regulate fertilizer runoff from the upstream Mississippi River watershed which is MASSIVE. Or maybe upstream farmers can regulate themselves and place oxidation ponds on the downstream sides of their property to mitigate downstream eutrophication. Forget the climate change bull shite. This is a real environmental issue that can be solved with engineering solutions.

in the immediate aftermath of Ida, I landed a gig doing damage surveying on the Island.
I was a 3rd party contractor for a 3rd party contractor that had been hired by Jefferson Parish.
Meaning there were 2 more sets of pockets being lined before I got paid.
And I was grossly overpaid for just walking around taking pictures.
and there is no way the 2 companies above me weren't making a profit off of me.
I can only imagine what the parish was being charged by the original contractor for that work.
I took a moment to just look around at everyone else on the island.
construction crews with forklifts, excavators, skid steers, etc. clearing out roads to make them passable
utility companies putting up (rather than repairing) all new power lines across the entire island
water companies trying to get the water mains back up and running etc.
etc.
so knowing what I was making per day to wit for a phone call to go take pictures of a property when given the address, I couldn't even begin to fathom how much each day was costing the State/Parish with everything else going on.

"Consulting" firms that are contracted with government normally charge governments 3 to 3.5 times your salary for your services. Consulting firms that contract with private corporations normally charge 1.2 to 2.5 times your salary.

I like GI very much but was shocked to see a multimillion dollar house for sale there.

so just as I thought, absolutely RIDICULOUS overspending and greasing of pockets.
I seriously sat in my truck and waited for someone from Town Hall to call and give me an address.
Then go to said address and upload 5-7 pictures of the outside of the property to a website.
That's all I freaking did for just shy of a month.
and I wasn't the only one that contract.
Rough math if your suggestions are correct, we were costing them somewhere in the neighborhood of $65,000 per day.

There are plenty for sale in that range, many of the newer ones, especially on the east end, cost that much to build.

Anytime I think about Grand Isle, I think about how it's in Jefferson Parish and what kind of backroom bullshite went down in the early 1800's to get it in there.

They are spot on. The lowest I've been charged is 1.2 times hourly rate (plus expenses and per diem) for inspectors. The highest I have charged is 3.5 for engineering services to the city of NOLA. JP is usually 3.1. A lot of "overhead" to deal with when dealing with local governments. Working with big O&G is about 2.0.

Four things. Those two plus fishing and O&G (I would say even especially O&G). Without oil and gas coming out of the area it likely would have been written off as a loss due to subsidence long ago. If memory serves, that post-Katrina elevated roadway between Golden Meadow and GI was done with national security funds as the area produces so much energy that it's considered vital to national security.

Good points.
