Posted in another thread a few weeks ago. I think it was December right after Edwards beat out Duke for governor. I was picking up my parents pretty late at BTR. I was near what I think were the phone banks where the guy shot the child molester. Airport was pretty empty. Along comes Buddy Roemer (still the sitting governor) all alone with his carry-on. Shakes my hand with a friendly “how’s it goin’” or something to that effect, then proceeds to the baggage claim. I’ve had similar interactions with several other state legislators and city councilmen over the years. No politicians in my inner circle of friends, nor within my business network either.

His office in Lafayette is two doors down from the office my sister works in. She has met him once and said he seems like a nice guy. They are all politicans so I doubt they will be a dick to people especially eligible voters.

Met the gov of Louisiana when i was a kid.
We were on a church retreat and stumbled upon one of his staff at a service station.
Next thing we knew, he arranged a meet and greet and a tour of the mansion.

Scalise is a really genuinely nice guy. Vitter, very stiff in person.
Nungesser is very friendly. This board won’t like it but Helena is very nice and approachable. Hell, Latoya always seemed nice and approachable in person believe it or it, although it was always the context of her drinking at a bar while on the job.

Kennedy is, in fact, very bright. We are seeing the surface on TV. He is working behind the scenes.
I have met a lot of people in state government. While they all have their problems (as does anyone), I believe the vast majority have good intentions.

I met Mike Foster once. Seemed pretty cool.
My aunt was a waitress at a restaurant in the 80’s and Edwin Edwards was one of her customers. The family story was that he very crudely and without subtlety hit on her.
Not a politician but I also have a not so great story about Cuba Gooding Jr.

EWE was the guest lecturer a couple times in my Louisiana Government class at LSU while Buddy Roemer was in office and Edwards was out of work.
One of the reporters from either WAFB or WBRZ got wind of it and decided to attend to see what was going on.
After class, Edwards spent a few minutes to speak to any students who had questions. We would line up to ask him individually after class rather than doing the "raise your hand" thing. This reporter was in line in front of me and Edwards recognized her. He told her that this Q&A was for students, and if she wanted to ask him anything she could meet him at his car afterwards.
She responded quickly with - "I don't f*** politicians for information!"
He replied - "That's okay. I only want a bl*w-job anyway."
I was never a fan of his, but you have to give the man credit for being quick on his feet!

I met Buddy Roemer, Mitch and Mary Landrieu. All three were very smart. Buddy Roemer had good ideas that would have reformed La. Government if the legislature had enacted his proposals…

Chris Turner (state rep) nice guy, actually very nice. Mike Johnson was nice the 2 times I met him, very genuine. Gov Blanco I met once and honestly was extremely respectful and genuine, talked with her about 5 minutes and she was such a nice lady.

I've met several. Some are sharp, some are dingbats but occasionallyfigure things out, and some of them can barely turn a light switch on. One that I met recently was on the house committee for state retirement. Dude didn't even know what a mutual fund was, and thought LASRS (State Employee Retirement) did almost 18% over the last decade. Literally anyone can go and download their report and see that they averaged 8%. This dude was literally on the committee and had no idea how their investments had performed.
These are the people handling billions of dollars in our state!

I know our current governor. He’s cool in person, not sure why he comes across as a douche canoe (term stolen from the OT) in public. I wish he wouldn’t do that.
I kinda know Nungesser. He answers my texts if I reach out.
Jindal- seems very smart, was nice to talk to
Mitch Landrieu- when I met him, I thought “this dude was born to be a politician- he f’in glows” Like it wasn’t human- maybe makeup or something.
Personal friends, went to LSU with one of them, 2 state reps. Both good dudes and love Louisiana.
One state senator, really good guy- I think he will do well nationally for us if the tides go in his favor.
Rode in Mardi Gras with a former state senator- still stay in touch somewhat.
Very close friends with my current and former parish president. Like go to each others houses and such. Former has statewide aspirations and will do well. Maybe can go higher.
Friends with our sheriff- that’s a good gig in Louisiana if you can get elected.
Know another sheriff and a chief of police well- same as above.
Friends with a small town mayor (kids are friends from school- we hit it off the same). Salt of the earth. Wants his town to grow and succeed. Major plus for the town.
Know the mayor of the town one of my businesses is in- total character, never had a reason to not like him. Trying his arse off to do a good job in a growing town.
Grew up with a district judge, acquainted with another.
Had breakfast with Garret Graves once- if you can’t like that dude, something may be wrong with you.
Acquainted with Mike Strain- he knows who I am- but we don’t communicate directly. Total character- he tickles the shite out of me. Like he was also born to do that job.
Know at least one statewide appointee.
With all that said, I don’t consider myself politically connected and not once, not ever have called for a favor. And Lord knows there have been times I’ve wanted to ask.
Perhaps that’s why I can have relationships with these folks.
