Not a falling out. But is a bit sad. Called my Mom few weeks back, just after the attempt on Trump. She immediately spoke as if through gritted teeth! Not the first time. I do occasionally throw a bone, trying to get through her head. But, God love her, she has that slammed-shut cult mindset.
On other hand, she forwarded me a link to Dukes of MAGA recently. I had already seen it, but was heartened that she could at least find humor in Trump and not be screaming at the sky!
She's a funny and caring person, I feel fortunate to be her son. But....nobody's perfect. I sometimes share my political thoughts with her, wanting to be open. But I don't push it. Saw Ma last year first time in 4 years, and delicately avoided speaking about the Orange One. I'll never pretend to have a different belief, but clear now it is pointless to penetrate her brain. Especially since she does not live in a swing state :) .

Unfortunately yes. My nephew, who I took in on his 18th b-day because his family life was shite. Bought him a car, gave him direction until he wanted to go off and do his own thing. He moved to the Seattle area and became totally indoctrinated. I love that kid more than anything but he will not correspond with me anymore. It kills me looking at old pics of us before the brainwashing started. I'm hoping he grows up and comes to realize his beliefs are fools gold. In the meantime, my heart is broken
That’s terrible.
Hang in there.

He got cussed out, spit on, and eventually punched in the teeth.
Wow.

Not at all. Almost all of my family are MAGA and though I’m center-right, I am the most educated of them all so naturally I am not a Trump supporter. But I don’t give any fricks who they want to vote for and no one cares that I’m anti-Trump. It rarely ever comes in conversation at all.

I don’t talk politics with my dumbass kids or dumbass nieces/nephews. They’ll come around when they start paying mortgages.
So fricking true.
And isn’t funny how the people with the least life experience typically lean left? Amazing coincidence.
To the OP:
I don’t have a big family but my aunt and uncle are NY liberals. I love them both and have great relationships with them but we know not to talk politics.
My mom is MAGA as frick so we talk shite all the time.

If you count my dumbass BIL. Typical liberal. Thinks the gov should pay for everything and mandate this and that.

Shame on him for being an equally insufferable twat.

Hence the saying if you're not a liberal you when you're young you have no heart. If you're not a conservative when you're old you have no brain.

I have more of a problem in my family with cousins who think I’m not right wing enough. We’ve got some borderline militia types in the family.

The family has no history of mental illness so none are Leftists. (1 cousin did retire from The Advocate but it was long enough ago she only had to hide her roots for a couple years to earn retirement.)
We all get along great.

My sisters and mom telling me what was going on during Katrina while I was sitting in BR with Blackhawks flying over my house all day, while they lived thousands of miles away was where it took a turn. More recently, the political falling out was bubbling before Trump (ex-SIL and her husband.) Adults can do adult things, but bringing my kids to a public pool and explaining how some nine year olds have penises and wear girls two piece swimsuits was a real punch you in the ovaries moment when my kids asked about it while the kid was being undressed at the pool, and not in the changing room, which was weird by itself (I think that was 2019.) They can suck arse and set their youngest up for lifelong anxiety, and luckily, my kids are old enough now not to fall for that shite. I also had a falling out with my ex-MIL, who is a hardcore (R) and loves Trump, because she wouldn't STFU, ever, and just enjoy meatloaf Monday. You're in an echo chamber, can we talk about your water yoga class or something?
Is talking to you like reading that? It hurt my head trying to understand your thoughts. You are all over the place. You are a weird dude.

I think it's common in many families but letting it get to a falling out is kind of sad. Family should be above politics in my humble opinion.

As my very educated dad often told me, education does not necessarily equal intelligence. He was friends with many blue collar Cajuns who could fix or make anything. Many of these people barely had high school educations. Some of the best and hardest working people in the world.

trying to confront and convince someone who is of the opposite political persuasion is like trying to push religion to them.
It pretty much is a religious level situation for many.
And you see them short circuit with cognitive dissonance when reality crushes their worldview.
It like a kid learning about Santa.

Have a couple siblings will barely communicate. Pisses me off, but I miss them.

Elon Musk is more intelligent than you and he supports Trump. That naturally makes you seem like an Ahole.

My sister is an old fashioned bleeding heart liberal who was in high school during the Vietnam War. She is the only one anywhere near the trunk of my family tree to the left of 80s Reagan. Me and her fight like cats and dogs over politics (in good due part to the fact that she believes MSNBC has never lied about anything and Fox has never spoken the truth about anything, she is like a female Rob Reiner) but we are still able to talk to each other about anything else like normal human beings.

Not family members but I have with friends. Some of which I haven't talked to in a while. Every liberal friend avoids conversations about politics with me. I'm not an a-hole because I never bring it up, but if they do it might be our last conversation, ever. I'm cool with that and they know it.

The only thing you can do to save yourself from being a total fool is to not vote for Harris.
