Great Society Reforms Showed True and Meaningful Progress - Look at the Numbers

LIVING WAGES
Black poverty stood at ~87% in 1940 and ~55% in 1959.
It fell to ~47% by 1960 and reached a record low of 17.1% in 2022.
Pre-1960s gains (1940–1960) were steep; post-Great Society progress continued but at a slower pace in some analyses.
Black-White income ratios improved over decades despite starting from extreme disadvantage (which is good for all).
EDUCATION
In 1940, only ~7% of Blacks had high school education (vs. 24% nationally).
Today, Black high school attainment is ~88% (near national average); adjusted cohort graduation rates ~81% (vs. 90% White, 94% Asian).
College attainment for Blacks ages 25+ rose to ~26% (vs. ~36%).
However I don’t pretend to speak for African American posters - I would like to hear your thoughts on how these reforms have improved your life.

Yea, absolutely no reason for them to be so violent.

Now do the stats for unwed mothers and "fathers" that don't stay around and raise their kids
Great Society killed the black family.
" I'll have those n*****s voting democrat for 200 years" - LBJ

I'm guessing nobody will chime in with the "70% of children born out of wedlock" reform.

Seems like the Great Society Reforms had zero effect. The bulk of improvement happened before, and given the trend would have kept moving down.

9 am and you’re spending your time doing this?
How long have you been unemployed?

Having taught high school for 6 years, I can tell you this statistic is meaningless because attainment of a high school diploma is no longer a consistent measurement of the skills and abilities of a graduate.
Many schools have become diploma factories designed to produce statistics that make superintendents and principals look successful when, in fact, many students graduate with skill levels well below even a 9th grade education.

Great. But what is actually being taught? What is being learned? What is the value of the education? What percentage of this is simply social promotion?

How are your slip and fall clients doing?

LBJ and the 60's War On Poverty and Great Society were like reparations and a poison pill to the black community. It fostered dependency and subverted the black two parent home creating a cultural cancer.

Great Society did nothing for black economic progress. You can thank Reagan, Clinton and Trump for that.
As for education, their gains are suspect as the vast majority are from shite public schools in urban areas.

If true, that’s shameful…

I’m not questioning your numbers but is it really honest to compare education and poverty to 1940 levels where almost every human was undereducated and poor?
And is it really honest to give credit to the welfare state for this considering this era was the most technologically and economically progressive era in all of recorded human history?

On paper, that seems wonderful.
The big question is: are they better educated now than in 1965? We see report after report demonstrating that a large percentage of HS graduates (of all races) cannot read above a 3rd grade level, cannot do basic math, and are woefully ignorant of basic historical facts.
The curriculum has been dumbed down to make sure everyone passes, and even those who continually fail are passed along to the next grade so as not to draw the attention of federal regulators for fear of losing federal funding.

Thanks Eisenhower.
2 years after the 64 bill it was at 41.8%.
You seem to be taking a lot of credit for things done and in motion long before "Great society reforms" actuallyhad an impact.

How is that good for all?
What is a woman?

You fail to realize that black culture and economics split in the 1970s.
Those from the lower echelon may not be able to read well upon graduation.

Uh you do, this is basically telling African Americans that you would sit in a chair in the corner while African Americans explain to your wife what a woman is.

Welfare state broke their families. More kids, more tax refund. Same with white trash. Same with illegals

So black poverty was rapidly disappearing BEFORE institution of The Great Society programs.

Why are you using 1940 numbers? In 1969, before the Great Society effect, it was 54%.
So in both education and poverty, blacks were improving dramatically BEFORE The Great Society.
