won't disney start having to pay real taxes as well. i think they save something like 10mm a year with the current setup.

They already pay taxes, but I doubt whatever additional ones that would be levied would cover the district’s expenses. I read the district historically operates at millions of dollars in losses every year that Disney subsidizes.

$1 billion of debt is a staggering amount for a county to take on.

Perhaps. But Disney World still NEEDS Florida.

Universal is well underway with a new park. Sea World is having record years, even having made a bid for Cedar Fair. Legoland just expanded. If Disney does anything, it will take YEARS for anything to happen... it has taken them 2 years to open a roller coaster.

What is Disney going to do, abandon their resorts and parks? Stop construction on things like the new towers at the Poly

I hope Disney shitcans their CEO and negotiates.

But the flip side is. 1000s of small businesses just like you only exist because Disney’s business it brings to their area allows them to

Pretty close to broken window fallacy logic.

If you have a tax structure that would suffocate a business like Disney from ever growing unless you gave it special exemptions for fifty years, something is wrong with the tax policy.

I also very much doubt Disney needed exemptions to thrive in the first place. It used its clout to convince FL to do so. The debate regarding the act of providing favors to some corporations and not others stands as very legitimate on its own.

Sure, 1000s of businesses sprung up around Disney because Disney exists, but how many Disney competitors were squashed because they don't get favorable tax treatment?

They can move jobs, move projects, etc. There is a lot they can do, everyone just always says “well they won’t do that”. Well ok, maybe they won’t, but it’s now on the table

They should move them to low cost and low tax California. Oh wait...

Liberals: "Big business is evil and should be taxed at ever increasing rates!"

Also liberals: "No, not that one!"

Can’t imagine the residents of the counties that will have to assume the district’s assets and liabilities will be thrilled when their taxes are increased to help cover the counties’ additional expenses, including a reported $1 billion of debt.

That's not the point.

Plus, if Disney says it is so adamant about teaching gay sex to 4 year olds that it's going to move Disney World over it, I would imagine that's going to convince even more parents to give up Disney.

You would imagine incorrectly. Despite any "principles", when millennial parents need the digital babysitter, Disney will be on, and that will drive DW visits.

A mere speck that is opening a huge new park and would welcome becoming a bigger speck, maybe even gobbling up some real estate...

I'm just enjoying the show.

Florida is doing what I've wanted more solidly red southern states to do forever - make their states inhospitable to the outsiders who would want to undo all the good things that make the state attractive in the first place.

But I am a little concerned about the longevity, I just don't trust Floridians not to turn on DeSantis or the next DeSantis down the road at some point. It takes resolve to do what he's doing and I'm not sure transplants basking in the glory of a reasonable COVID response are immune to reverting back to the way they used to think about politics/governance.

The bill’s sponsor says the bill doesn’t actually dissolve the district and gives the legislature a year to review the district and potentially dissolve it. My guess is this is an election year stunt and they quietly abandon this effort after the election.

I would agree with you if they weren’t registering Republican when they get there at a rate never before seen.
