FDR Deliberately Hid His Health Issues from Voters in 1944 - Ethical Failure or His Right?

Many don’t realize Roosevelt hid his serious heart condition and declining health through a concious and coordinated effort by his doctors and aides, who issued misleading public statements, limited his campaign appearances, and controlled media access while downplaying symptoms.
He justified this as necessary to reassure voters during World War II that he remained strong enough to lead the nation through the ongoing global conflict, avoiding any perception of weakness that could harm his reelection and the war effort.
Whether or not this was fair to the voters is in the eye of the beholder. Many believe voters have the right to know the well-being of a potential commander in chief. Some say he was a private citizen and had no legal obligation to reveal personal information.

He was not a private citizen. He was the President of the United States of America.
I actually blame the press. They knew about his condition. They conspired with his handlers to keep a lid on it. They are supposed to report the truth. They are not supposed to be beholden to the government, no matter which party or person is in power.

Early on he did try to avoid disclosing his walking disability from polio. Based upon what I’ve read, his heart condition
only manifested itself late in his presidency. Regardless, he was revered by the public for his leadership during the Depression and WW2. He’ll always be ranked as one of our greatest presidents even by those who disagreed with some aspects of The New Deal…
