Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Otters Eaten by Orcas Upon Release

I was listening to Rush on Wednesday and he talked about this story as if it were true.
I thought surely there is footage of this, but upon googling I see Snopes and the Washington Post both say the story is fake.

Anybody ever hear this story? I don't give snopes or WP much credibility, but I tend to believe them since I find no links to the story or footage of the incident.
For reference: What I imagined...

The average cost of rehabilitating a seal after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $80,000. At a special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A minute later, in full view, they were both eaten by a killer whale.
I thought surely there is footage of this, but upon googling I see Snopes and the Washington Post both say the story is fake.

Is it true that two oiled seals were rehabilitated at a cost of $80,000 each and upon being released into the wild were promptly eaten by a killer whale? No. This is an urban legend, as explained at Snopes.com. However, it is true that the cost to clean and rehabilitate oiled sea otters was about $80,000 per animal.

That's because I'm open minded enough not to just put blind faith in one side or the other. I seek facts.

It wouldn't surprise me if it were true. Nature is a bitch.

I don't recognize the trappings in this story, but I do remember one story about one seal that was rescued being released and promptly killed by a shark in the Seattle area.
May have been fake news back then too - don't recall the source. Not much was made of it however.

Orcas are are badass.

The real story is the $80,000 cost which is true. The Orca part, while funny and apparently wrong, is just window dressing.
You're saying the Orca part was the most shocking detail to you?

Exxon saw the BP fines and probably thought, "We got off easy."

That gif is oddly satisfying.

The fake news WaPo and Snopes are FOS as usual. I remember the video of a bunch of school children present during the release of the animals (can't remember if they were seals/sea lions) but yeah some of them were chummed up by the Orcas while they were present. They got a dose of nature in living color. I believe he, Rush, had a clip of it on his television show in the early 90's.

I guess the people who were damaged by the spill should care, if they spent $80k helping otters while they lost their jobs.
I wonder why it cost $80K? Were they putting these otters up in the Ritz Carlton?
I had an argument with my cousin, who lives in Homer Alaska and is very liberal. We were visiting them in Homer, shortly after the Exxon Valdez matter was settled in the courts. I believe they ended up paying around $3.5B. My cousin was furious that Exxon was not paying more than they were, because there were people who had lost their livelihood, and he thought they should have been compensated more.
My argument was that a lot of the money paid by Exxon was likely wasted. Some of it was probably bribe money. Much of the money didn't go to the people that were damaged, but, instead, a lot of it ended up going to the local political machine and overly generous contracts were awarded to people who were politically connected. The fisherman who was put out of business was probably screwed, but it probably wasn't because Exxon didn't pony up enough money.

I'm sure quite a few posters on here received money they didn't deserve from BP. Read a while back an article that referenced how Birmingham was using their BP settlement funds. Really, Birmingham?

Yes its true. I remember when it happened.

I know several people who fleeced the BP deal. Sorry frickers as far as I'm concerned. Not only were they not affected financially, they all had plenty of money anyway. Just another boondoggle, that BP deal.

Like the entire fiduaciary purpose of civil court isn't to make the victims whole???

Birmingham didn't get any direct BP money. The State of Alabama received a settlement of about a billion dollars and spread it around where they saw fit, including some in Birmingham.
They also used it to fund the state's Medicaid budget for this year.
