Just because a murderer says someone used a racial slur against him doesn't mean it really happened. However, the victim is still dead.

If a genderless, race-less 27 year old punched an irate and verbally abusive genderless and race-less 77 year old and the 77 year old died, and the 27 year old had no criminal history, I would not care if said 27 year old got a sentence of this type

Torn here. You can't be strutting around throwing around racial slurs and not expect to catch some hands. That said, at some point you got to realize you're dealing with a 77 year old pos and just have to be able to let it go. He didn't go get a gun and kill the guy he punched him and the dude couldn't take a punch. Probably a light sentence but the guy definitely doesn't deserve to have his life ruined over it.
Definitely would be reported differently if the roles were reversed though.

However indecent, racism is a protected form of speech. If you're going into chimp mode for someone calling you a name, then maybe racism wasn't all that unjustified.
