In a fair election it proves that the winning candidate is more in touch with the populace. I don’t necessarily need an expert either. Experts are wrong all the time for a variety of reasons. Common sense matters greatly and that seems to be lacking more and more these days.

Umm…no, it doesn’t mean they’re an expert.
In the case of President, you’re hoping to elect someone who is like the CEO of a company. They come from a certain background that doesn’t lend expertise into every aspect, but they have to be smart enough to know who to lean on and trust.
Example: Biden vs Trump
Biden: Appointed a Secretary of Energy whose background was being a college professor and a politician.
Trump: Appointed a Secretary of Energy who is CEO of an extremely successful oil & gas services technology and been a key cog in many strategic energy projects, including nuclear.
Biden: Appointed a community activist and politician to run the Department of the Interior.
Trump: Appointed to run that same department a former Governor who has experience in the balance of managing government owned lands in his state, consisting of both Federal and State owned lands.
Neither Biden or Trump personally has the expertise to best run those departments for the country, but there is a clear difference in the path one took on who to appoint vs the other.

What do elections even prove? We don’t vote for experts who can solve specific problems (because that isn’t who runs for office, generally); we vote for people we like.
It all seems so stupid. Our economy seems just as fake and pointless, too.
