Descendants of enslaved who built Missouri university want over $70 billion for unpaid slave labor

Descendants of the enslaved Black people who built a university in Missouri calculated that they were owed up to $74 billion in unpaid labor.

The calculation was announced on St. Louis University's campus [SLU] on Thursday – an effort being pushed by the Descendants of St. Louis University Enslaved [DSLUE].

DLSUE was joined by a state lawmaker, a civil rights attorney, and economists to announce their estimation of the monetary value of unpaid labor in the construction of SLU.

Based on "labor for 24 hours per day, 365 days per year for 70 enslaved people from 1823-1865," economist Julianne Malveaux estimated that $365 million in unpaid labor is owed. Furthermore, adding interest over time amounts to $70 billion.

Areva Martin, a civil rights attorney and the lead counsel for DSLUE, reportedly sent a letter to St. Louis University President Fred Pestello, saying that the institution needs to do more to redeem itself even though the institution has already "taken steps to recognize and memorialize its history through the Slavery, History, Memory, and Reconciliation Project (SHMRP.)"

Slaves. They were slaves.

"Enslaved" is as linguistically retarded as saying "THE Ohio State University."

It's simply the latest attempt at raising the temperature of the water the English language sits in, as we steadily march to boiling.

I don't understand why they think they are legitimately entitled to something they had no part in doing and haven't endured any suffering or injustices
based on happenings in the distant past.

Everyone wants to get outraged at the sale of slaves here, but none of the "activists" ask where the traders got the slaves, in the first place. All this Black History, and not a one of them has watched the first 30 minutes of Roots, apparently.

Good luck getting money from the deceased.

But if that's how we're doing things, let's start looking at crimes committed by the generations in-between. Your grandfather murdered someone? Civil lawsuit and that money gets deducted. Assault, drug dealing, DWI, let's start combing through records...

Reminds me of that scene in Friday when Ezell slipped on the floor, "ohhh I'm hurt. I hurt my neck and my back. I'm suing for 150k but we can settle out of court right now for 20 buck".

70 billion. Yeah ok. Good luck with that. Before attorney fees, that's like 350 million a person.

this is SLU not Mizzou. SLU isn't even part of the University of Missouri system.

Will they give an address where a bill could be sent for all of the costs associated with their existence post Civil War forward?

It's crazy to begin with...
But, how about assuming, working 24/7.
Apparently, they never slept , ate, etc.

In addition, apparently they'd have invested every single penny, and not withdrawn anything to this day.

It's insane even if you accept their retarded initial premise.

The university should calculate the wages they would have paid "white" workers, then deduct the average cost of living from those wages, which should leave about $2 left over each week, and tell them, "sure, we estimate we collectively owe y'all about $1.2 Million. Take it or sue us."
