Comey said that he felt Trump was basically expecting a quid pro quo for staying on his ten year term. That's significantly damaging.

The attorney general asked him to refer to an investigation as a matter, and he doesn't think that's unusual enough to put in a memo?

I think I know about Comey - he is responding to the unwarranted smear attack from Trump - for the sake of his family and the FBI in general.
I would do the same with less civility. I would allow nobody, including the POTUS, to smear me without response.
Trump was a jerk and deserves to be assailed for it. Nothing to do with obstruction of justice, certainly not impeachment - but just a personal slap-down for his pettiness.
