CLEVELAND GUARDIANS STRUGGLING TO ATTRACT FANS, RATINGS AFTER NAME CHANGE

Didn't mean to shout the title but that's how it pasted.

As a result of years of pressure from activist groups, several years ago, the Cleveland baseball franchise announced they would soon be changing the team’s name.
Naturally, the team prominently declared its commitment to the correct motivations, suggesting that unity and “community” explained their decision
Well, if the numbers are to be believed, it’s possible that fans might not have taken kindly to the rebranding efforts.
Local TV ratings for the newly christened Guardians have dropped dramatically, with one report placing the number at -30%.
That’s the third biggest decline of any team in the league, with only the moribund Oakland Athletics and rapidly fading San Francisco Giants reporting worse numbers.
MLB ratings overall have been generally flat, with even the Baltimore Orioles seeing a slight increase to this point in the season.
The Guardians however, have seen their numbers fall precipitously.
It’s not just ratings; in person attendance is down significantly from previous years as well.
In 2019, the last fully pre-pandemic season, the team averaged 21,465 fans per game.
This year, so far, average attendance has fallen to 15,025.
It might be tempting to blame the low numbers on poor results this season, but the Guardians are currently 2nd in the American League Central, only two games behind the first place Minnesota Twins.

You don't say? And now they're likely just gonna throw their hands up as if it's some big mystery as to why. Just like with the NFL... they swore up and down that the anthem kneeling & flag disrespect had absolutely nothing to do with revenues and viewership being way down when it was abundantly clear that was the entire cause.

It’s a dumbass name just like Washington Commanders.

They've always struggled to draw fans for some reason even though they are a wildly popular team in the region. Playing in front of empty-ish stadiums is nothing new for them. However, I do still have several friends in that area and they have all stated that the name change has definitely had an impact, and not for the better.
The Dolans and Dan Snyder deserve all of this for caving to the pressure of their corporate sponsors who were only looking out for their ESG scores.

People don’t like it when you rename long standing institutions and try to change the identity of something which is part of the fabric of their community? Whodathunkit!?

Guardians is worse but Commanders is pretty terrible as well.

Cleveland hasn't had good MLB attendance in years, even during their recent stretches of success. They are always in the bottom third of the league.

I heard “Cleveland Guardians” the other day on a commercial and thought it a was a soccer team.
I had to be reminded there was no more “Cleveland Indians”

They’re one game back currently.

Will be interesting to see if the Commanders have a similar result.

Indians fans are probably just watching Major League and Major League II so they can relive the good ole days!

They are 2nd in the AL too

It also didn't help that they've dumped a lot of their top players for next to nothing. I just wish the Texas Rangers would be that competitive (we spend $500M on two players and have problems beating Oakland).

If they were going to change it they should have gone with Spiders. Cool name and actual historic precedent.
Otherwise stick with Indians in spite of the losing tradition.

My comment--in this thread about attendance--was a referencing attendance rankings, not AL Central standings.

Just retarded. Baseball is already a dying sport. I don't know a single damn person irl who watches baseball.
Surely the MLB is also aware that their sport is dying. Surely Cleveland was aware the sport is dying. So their idea to fix their dying sport is to wipe their asses on the few people who actually watch baseball games... in order to go woke and satisfy the people who have never watched baseball and will never watch baseball.
