Taken together with the number of people who died during the year — 11.1 million — China has more older people than anywhere else in the world, an amount that is rising rapidly. China’s total population was 1,409,670,000 at the end of 2023, a decline of two million people, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Exactly. The govt decided to spend a bundle building apartment complexes for millions. People aren't renting them.
Cause:
a. Maybe it was a stupid idea by the govt.

Local Chinese governments are suspected of overstating their population by at least 100 million to get more money from Beijing. If that's correct, they are on the verge of demographic collapse. They call it the 4-2-1 problem. 4 grandparents, 2 parents, 1 child. A couple won't be able to afford kids when they're working to help support 4 retired parents and possibly 8 retired grandparents. Also, they're drowning in debt far worse than we are. Their demography is too aged to have consumption-led growth and we're re-shoring our manufacturing back to North America, so they can't have export-led growth either. China is truly screwed.

It's partially that, but it's partially industrialization. The birth rates always decline when people move from the farms to the cities. In Shanghai the birth rate is 0.7 per woman. Women aren't having children because they don't want/can't afford them, not because the government says that they can't.

4 grandparents laying around in bed, mom keeping them alive with cabbage soup and dad working 12 hours making toothpaste caps, and Charlie taking any job he can to bring home a loaf of bread

How often do you go to China? There are too damn many people everywhere. It becomes uninhabitable in many areas. They should reduce their population by 30%.
