This sounds like a bull shite charity that allows people to avoid decisions like, "Should I forgo the PS4 game and buy school supplies?" It's like the morbidly obese "food insecure" who show up at the local food bank.

I have a friend that works in a school that is basically all free and reduced lunch students. They have more backpacks to give away every year than they have kids to take them.

Some of it is because the backpacks are generic type backpacks and even the kids in poverty want to pick out their own backpacks.

But we don’t have an entitlement problem.

Nah. Just get the teachers to pay for it like the Catholic schools
Yeah, that's not what happens where we send the kids. My wife just spent all yesterday buying supplies.

these kids are not embarrassed, they have been taught at an early age that someone will step in and take care of them and if no one does, it is because the world hates them.

The bulk of my school years was in the 80s and it was the same then.

They would put out a supply that was more than an individual student needed knowing that there were enough responsible parents to provide enough of a supply surplus to meet the needs of the kids that didn’t bring their own supplies.

ETA: My youngest goes to a private school and her supply list is very modest because it is only for her use.

I'm not criticizing your decision, I'm simply talking of how embarrassment is a great teacher.

Most of these kids over the age of 12 have a mobile device and data.....a pack of Ticonderoga pencils should be within the budget.

When I was in elementary school all the free lunch kids would have to go up to the teacher's desk every Monday morning so she could check their names off a list.

those who cannot afford are even gifted all their school supplies

Things are to the point now that even ones that can afford them just don't buy them because they expect them to be gifted.

A lack of personal responsibility, priorities out of wack, and lack of family structure.

1. You misunderstanding "suffering". Cancer? Check. Starvation? Check. Disease? Check. Abuse? Check. Using generic school supplies or last years pencils? Not so much.

2. Given what human nature is, one should always be very hesitant to break the link between cause and effect in the realm of human endeavor. It is one of the most powerful methods to change human behavior and motivate people there is.

I'm all for preventing children from suffering...but not having the same kinds of nice things other kids do in a school setting can be a tremendous motivation to success later in life.

Sorry to hear how she feels a flu coming on. Hope she gets better once the school drive is over.

My personal issue is that I'd be surprised if there's more than a handful of parents that can't afford supplies in my entire district yet I have to send enough for three kids every year. Where are these supplies going?

It's ridiculous that this is done. I don't understand why parents even allow it.

My son's school sent a form home before the end of last school year for a new program. You sign up, pay $30, and the school is supposed to provide all his supplies for this upcoming school year. He starts back in a week. I fully expect that I will still have to go buy more supplies and this program to flop.

Well said. But some, in this thread, are so pissed off at the parent they are fine with the child being embarrassed.

Because socialism.

This will not happen to my kid.
