President Trump has tasked Rand Paul with reducing tensions with Iran as Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visits the U.S. this week.

The Kentucky Republican senator pitched the president on being a back channel between the two countries during a round of golf this past weekend, Politico reported Wednesday.

Trump agreed to the idea after months of trying to start negotiations with Iran after his administration pulled out of the nuclear deal and imposed new sanctions on the country.

Trump needs to make sure Rand Paul doesn't project weakness and doesn't give the farm away.

I agree with Rand on the futility of forever war and how we need to get out of the mideast as much as we can but he doesn't strike me as a competent and credible negotiator when it comes to dealing with islamic fanatics.

If Rand pitched him a strategy I like it. I think those two really make a good team together.

Agreed. Rand strikes me as so desirous of pulling out of the ME that he give way too much for a deal (like closing the Riyadh base and pulling all those troops back to the US for a pinky-swear from Iran not to enrich any uranium to weapons grade).

I like the idea of a Rand + Trump team. Rand is smarter and knows the policy, Trump is politically savvy and has the balls to execute.

It's not like he'll have final say in the deal.

A libertarian even considering voting for anyone other than Trump was never much of a libertarian to start with

I didn't vote for Trump because:
1. I didn't trust he was sincere about his platform in the first campaign.
2. I didn't like his stance on farm subsidies, especially with respects to ethanol (and still don't)
3. I didn't like his constant shite posting on twitter (though I now have learned to just find it hilarious)
4. I am a FAIR Tax advocate, and Gary Johnson was the only candidate advocating for the FAIR Tax Act.

There is almost zero chance I won't be voting for Trump in 2020, though.

If Rand just wanted to pull out fast then why did he sign the Iran letter in 2015? He didn't do it to be contrarian to Obama because Rand is good on reaching across the aisle if Dems are taking a pro-libertarian stance on a particular issue. He did it to put the country in a better negotiating position. I think Rand will do fine

I remember on the tax bill Rand was against it at first. And he openly said that he was not looking for some pork barrel project to be a yes vote, he had a few concerns and the President was working on a solution. I noticed when Trump was lambasting a few of the cuck GOP senators he purposely did not mention Rand, and Rand explained when he was a yes that Trump had come through on a couple of the issues that concerned him. Thats the way govt is supposed to work.

Dude clearly sold his soul to someone in the last few years. He's a narcissist. The only think that matters to him is his ego.

No but putting someone in that may well signal such willingness only to be over-ridden by POTUS not only wastes time but will just reinforce Iran's reluctance to negotiate as well as their belief in their justifications for more of their actions in and around the Persian Gulf.
