....unless you had it wired to your account. Then you can skip all of the holds.

Another racial discrimination lawsuit that has no actual evidence of racism.

Color me shocked

There's still a limit on that, which I believe is up to $2000.

I don't use it much, but my bank has a 20k rolling 30 day limit. I remember doing it once for a 3500ish check, so I'm guessing 20k at once would be ok. May be acct related as I've been with them a long time, but don't know.

I am white (Ritz, not saltine), and I was asked a shitload of questions when I opened an estate account after my father died. In fact, I had to deposit some cash in order to open it and any check was held for 7 days until the account had been open 30 days.

The comedy here is endless...

quote:

“It was an unfortunate situation. They took my special moment away.

Well boo fricking hoo... I did not know special moments were protected over my funds in Chase Bank.

“Dr. Mitchell-Stewart showed proof of identification."
Ok, that is a good start.

"She showed proof that she was a doctor by presenting a business card." That is absolutely ROFL. Like a business card is a proof of employment.

"She even called employees from her medical group to confirm who she was” Oh, we got em now! How dare they not believe these other people on the other end of the phone.

This almost seems like a staged setup and a lot of other info is missing.

According to a lawsuit, staff members at JPMorgan Chase began to ask Dr. Malika Mitchell-Stewart unwarranted questions pertaining to her check and position as a doctor, ABC13 reports. Dr. Stewart describes feeling like a criminal after showing her check. JPMorgan Chase ultimately led with a decision to refuse Dr. Stewart’s service and declared the check fraudulent. Stewart believes she was targeted due to the color of her skin.

I don't feel like this is unusual. This is a common fraud tactic and banks are smart to ask questions when taking a large check for a new customer trying to open a new account.

ETA: As others have stated, I too have had checks held for a week or more when opening a new bank account. It's usually a certain number of days after opening the account before they start depositing checks immediately.

ETA2: I would try to avoid using this doctor at all costs. She is publicly displaying her stupidity.

I would avoid any doctor who has 'special moments.'

Ole girl really thought she could open a bank account with a business card and someone saying “yes, that’s her” over the phone.

She's a doctor with a great job.

She should take her money to another bank.

This isn't worth crying to the media over.

They just didn't want to give her immediate access to the money. Which seems entirely reasonable.
Does it?

It sounds like she had an account in Austin where she finished residency. She wanted to start a new account at Chase in Houston where she'd be employed. Would be EXTREMELY easy for Chase to either (a) Conduct a wire transfer of money from her Austin Bank, (b) Confirm validity of the Valley Oaks Medical Group check and a subsequent wire transfer/approval, or (c) do both.

I seriously doubt this was a race driven action, but it was stupid action on the bank's part on several levels.

Key word is new account.

Why did she want a new account?

Pretty sure she could’ve used her old account to deposit into. Story doesn’t add up.

Graduating from Medical School is a "special moment".

Depositing a check is called "daily business".

WTF are you talking about???? Should the bank also follow her home and wipe her arse for her. Its a frickin business transaction, you come with all the pertinent information and we open an account.

Anyone who told me they were a doctor and tried to open an account with a business card and a phone call.....would be highly suspect as being who they say they are.

How about she does what most people do, call ask what she needs to open an account and bring the info with her.

This is a set up for a lawsuit and they did a poor job of setting it up.

By the way, for those who think doctors are some exclusive intel group, the US is full of imports who got their degree from less than desirable places, many US citizens who flunk their test scores, their names are sold by the clearing house to "schools" in the caribbean and they come down here to get their degree.

Since when does a person need to provide their profession or place of employment to open a bank account? Just opened a new account at a different bank ,all they wanted was my ID.

Valley Oaks Medical needs to know that their new employee will sue a bank for $500K because her feelings* got hurt because they wouldn't let her deposit a check. Good frigging luck when they fire her for melting down when one of her patients die.

* new employee get severe emotional distress, mental anguish, disgust, revulsion, nausea, embarrassment, disparagement, shock, and utter humiliation over nothing
