The article doesn't say if she had an account there. I'm assuming she didn't.

EDIT: According to an ABC News article I just linked, she did not have an account at the bank and was trying to open one with the $16,000 check

A sign-on bonus from a job is always a win. However, for one Black Houston doctor, her moment of victory was swiftly taken away due to discriminatory practices.

ABC13 reports that Dr. Malika Mitchell-Stewart had recently completed her residency before securing a position at Valley Oaks Medical Group. The Black Houston doctor was subsequently awarded a $16,000 check from her newly acquired position.

Dr. Malika Mitchell-Stewart then went to JPMorgan Chase Bank at First Colony Branch in Sugar Land to deposit her new earnings.

Unfortunately, her celebration was cut short.

According to a lawsuit, staff members at JPMorgan Chase began to ask Dr. Malika Mitchell-Stewart unwarranted questions pertaining to her check and position as a doctor, ABC13 reports. Dr. Stewart describes feeling like a criminal after showing her check. JPMorgan Chase ultimately led with a decision to refuse Dr. Stewart’s service and declared the check fraudulent. Stewart believes she was targeted due to the color of her skin.

“It was an unfortunate situation. They took my special moment away. I felt like a criminal. I’ve never done anything wrong,” said Dr. Mitchell-Stewart, according to ABC13. “In order to get a Texas medical license or a medical license at all, you have to have a clean record. You have to go to school for so many years, and they just didn’t care. They didn’t respect that. They didn’t respect my credentials.”

“Dr. Mitchell-Stewart showed proof of identification. She showed proof that she was a doctor by presenting a business card. She even called employees from her medical group to confirm who she was,” added attorney Justin Moore, according to ABC13.

She was trying to deposit it? The bank wouldnt ask questions about that, if it didnt clear you just wouldnt get the money in your account.

Did she try to cash it? Or try to cash a big chunk of it?

So, she’s going to deposit the check in a bank where she DOESN’T have an account?

She didn't have an account:

Dr. Malika Mitchell-Stewart said she had just finished her residency. On Dec. 18, 2021, she went to Chase's First Colony Bank to open an account and deposit a $16,000 check from her new job at Valley Oaks Medical Group.

I am pretty much on her side in this but a business card dont mean shite for ID. She should have been able to show her proof of employment.

Chase could have just taken the check and held it until it cleared...

Fine...I'll do it.

I have doubts this is fully accurate. Call me an a-hole, but fool me once shame on you...perpetuate countless race hoaxes and fool me again, shame on me.

As soon as one of these turn out to be true, I'll be less skeptical.

The article is vague. I'm assuming that's intentional.

1. Any check over $10,000 has the funds held for at least a week.

2. If she was trying to open a new account, it triggers additional safeguards.

3. frick CHASE BANK.

This doesn't prove anything. Anyone can make this up, easily.

Depositing a $16k check is a big deal.

I’m thinking of going back to school to become a doctor. Apparently it’s not as difficult as we were lead to believe and they’ll accept just about anyone based on the amount of borderline high functioning retarded people we’ve seen over the last few years that are doctors.

Lies.
Banks have different rules for blacks than whites.
Which mean, if the bank turns down a black, they have to submit special paperwork explaining why the black applicant was denied. They do not have to do this for whites denied.
Further, banks have quotas to meet, and they want unqualified WHITE applications, so their % line up.

I would bet she wanted a some of that deposit back in cash and bank said no. Comeback in 7 days when check has cleared issuer and you can all you want. Pretty standard for large checks on new accounts.

They should have asked her why she finished residency in December.
