The government CAFE standards are to blame for that. That's also why the Ford Ranger and Chevy Colorado's aren't small at all either. Trump needs to get rid of that and all of the EPA carbon credits bullshite that is holding industry back before he leaves.

Actually, to support a larger cattle herd more corn would have to be produced. Currently 45% of the US corn drop goes to animal feed. It is actually the biggest driver in corn production

no those trucks are smaller but not nearly as small as they used to be, i'm 65 so i remember this ford ranger

wheelbase of 107.9 inches, current ford ranger wheel base 128.7 inches an 83 ford ranger was shorter than a current honda accord. if you would have told me in 84 that toyota would build a half ton pick up truck in fort worth no less i would have told you that you're crazy. it's almost as if the current ranger is built for a particular market not served by the F150!
the fact is that cars have never been bigger, more powerful, safer or last as long as they do today.
an 82 corvette had 200 horse power, a current stock vette 490. thanks a lot trump!

It's because of the price floor on sugar. It's the primary reason we dump HFCS into everything instead of just using sugar. And the corn lobby in Iowa loves it, obviously.

Not that sugar would be any better than HFCS. I don't know where that myth started but I suspect it was the sugar cane industry.

80-85% of the 45% is used domestically. And only 30% of that 45% is used domestically for beef cattle
30-45% Animal feed
33-40% Ethanol
18-0% human consumption
10-15% export
So like the theme of the thread, if we cut out Ethanol, reduced our corn consumption as human food, we would not need more corn, we would need less. This would open up more land for cattle ranching.

The largest 10% of U.S. farms receive approximately 80% of federal commodity subsidies. It is stupid to subsidize corn (and soy) when we have so much of it that we have to invent ways to put it in products when at the same time we have a beef shortage. Turn some of those cornfields into pasture and grow more beef. Buy live herds from south America if we have to jumpstart that.

Don’t let repubs off the hook like that. You can thank Iowa’s Chuck Grassley for the ethanol problem. There’s a lot of corn farmers in Iowa that have benefited greatly from Chuck going balls deep in our collective asses with the ethanol mandates. Also let’s not forget that it raised prices on the number one biggest staple food in South America which can be argued gave people another reason to crash our border.

Big corn only exists because of big sugar
If sugar cane planters here would’ve stayed competitive with foreign growers rather than leaning on the government to use excessive protectionism then high fructose corn syrup would’ve never been adopted and corn would still be cow feed

And its not just the ethanol. I buy e-free for all my small engines and they still gunk up if left for a couple months. Gas didnt used to do that.
And I periodically test my e-free to verify it really is e-free. Its easy, add a little water to a glass jar, use a sharpie to mark the water level and then add e-free gas. Shake well for 1 minute and let rest for 15 minutes. If the water line is still where it was then it is e-free. If the line is above the marked like it contains ethanol. Ethanol will bond with water and will make the water line higher.

i dont know the stats, but this seems reasonable. the problem is that once modern vehicles DO start to fail now, it's practically catastrophic. truck might make it to 100 or 150k miles (right outside of warranty of course), but the breakdown is going to cost you $10k to fix. so now you have a lead weight that you probably still owe on, and thousands of dollars worth of repairs to get back on the road.

I agree we way over produce corn, which leads to all kinds of negative outcomes for our health and our vehicles. Government subsidies usually lead to misallocation of resources.
