He isn't remembering correctly. He wanted to play field Hockey, not lacrosse. He had to play football because back in those days, bigotry ran rampant and they didn't allow boys to play field hockey.

"Technically" it goes back over 1000 yrs, as it derives from a sport Indians played and it was "colonized" by a Canadian to the more current form in the late 1800s. So it was around but I doubt he had ever heard of the sport in HS. Also, it's more of a Spring season game then fall, so that adds another piece to his delusional lie.
On a side note, I was so pissed the Lacrosse leagues went woke back yrs back. They had a golden opportunity to gain sports fans looking for somewhere to avoid that garbage. Same with hockey.

I don't know about Delaware, but it was big enough in the 1950s in places like New York, that Jim Brown is still considered one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Years ago, I read a book By James Michener titled " The Eagle And The Raven". It was about Sam Houston and Santa Anna and the fight for Texas, but it covered their lives growing up, and how they ended up where they were.
According to Michener, Sam Houston would go play Lacrosse with The Cherokee, as a teenager in the early 1800s.
Pretty sure that's true, Michener did meticulous research for his books.
