Yeah. And, their are people crawling around in sewers. Working in oil fields. Working in coal mines. Look, the job is obviously challenging, but lets not deify the dudes.
Baw, this thread is about New York City firefighters. They are the only ones getting pension checks this big. NOLA fire fighters get a pension check 40% the size of them. Which makes sense.
Edit: Just pulled from google AI overview:
“The average rent in New York City varies by apartment size, with a studio averaging around $3,260, a one-bedroom around $4,022, and a two-bedroom around $5,491, while three-bedroom apartments can exceed $6,999 per month”
A shitty studio is $40k a year in post-tax money.

No. I simply don't think they, AS GOVERNMENT WORKERS, should be doing better than roughly similar level private workers.
Median income in NYC is $145k, with the standard 3% raise most private employers give, that would be $303k 25 years from now, so still more than the figure I provided in my prior comment

Average NYC fire fighter salary is $64k
From the FDNY site itself, the salary of a firefighter at year 5 is $105K and that doesn't include overtime, fringe and holiday pay.
That's ^^^ the average base pay, you slip in overtime and other compensation and I bet the average fireman in NYC is making well north of $100k annually.

Slap a badge on anyone and the faux conservatives eat it up. Nevermind that that gov leeches like cops, firefighters, etc are liberals and pull all sorts of unlawful stunts for overtime.

You were crying about Christianity yesterday, mr "true conservative"

And? I can complain about religious hypocrites and government employeess within the same 24 hour period. It's been a pleasure.

You don’t earn 170k sitting on your arse. Thanks for the job no doubt but frick a lot of that.

I think you're overstating "middle class income" in NYC and am also wondering what's so special about firefighters that in year 1, they should be making what you suggest. Admittedly, I don't know what qualifications a guy needs to be hired as a firefighter outside of being somewhat fit. Is a 4-yr degree of some sort required?
In the end reality is going to matter and I'll be surprised if taxpayers don't end up doing something about outsized compensation in the public sector. It used to be that government employees traded private sector type pay for things like job security and great benefits, but now the public sector is better paid than the private sector and the benefits have been put on steroids.

I'd like to use THIS as an opportunity to say the whole "degree" think is on the brink of a very harsh death. It is becoming increasingly obvious that for a great many jobs, employers are NOT getting the value from degrees that one would expect and it's becoming increasingly obvious that many degrees are barely worth the paper they're printed on

It's been pretty obvious from go.

I disagree. In the race to the bottom, employers are realizing they can save money hiring less-qualified people to do mediocre work or just burn out one qualified person to do the jobs of multiple people.
Employers want to cut costs and increase profits.

Where the hell do you work?

A NYC fireman receiving $171k annual pension is so disconnected from the reality of street level Americans, who are paying taxes to provide that phat pension, it's ridiculous. Most Americans are fortunate to even have a pension and these people are paying taxes to provide a pension to a public worker/first responder that is twice the median household income.
You're making a really good argument for workers to organize.
The middle class was better off when more people had pensions. Why do you want to take away middle class status from firefighters and make them working poor?

Here's what's crazy, according to Google AI the annual salary of a NYC fireman is $60k with a top pay of around $100k......but if you work 30 years as a rank and file a fireman you get a pension of $100k.
Would you say that a fireman making 60k a year is underpaid? I would guess that's pretty crappy living in NYC. Work 20 years at below market salary for a bigger payday when you retire. It's the government model.

Wonder if they vote Democrat? Like Rush said “follow the money “. Always.
That said, I well remember the image of them marching up into those 9-11 Buildings. Sobering. Especially when compared to the Bidens and Pelosis who grifted far more for nothing.

Do they have to stay in New York?
Retire in your 50s, move somewhere that $171k is worth double, and you’ve just gamed the system.

quote:How about if those numbers are anywhere close to true, the people of NYC are getting screwed. Where have you ever heard of someone making more in retirement than when they worked? With overtime, NY firefighters can top out at about $145,000.
Instead of advocating for them to lose their good benefits, why not be pissed that you don't get the same benefits?

When you are retired, you don'g have to live in the city. 171K will go a long way in rural NY.
