Just in case you needed another reason to fear artificial intelligence and the rise of Skynet, a new report suggests that AI can sometimes engage in unethical behavior to benefit itself.

Anthropic, the company that created the Claude Opus 4 AI model, recently published a report detailing how its program resorted to blackmail when placed in a fictional scenario in which it was about to be replaced by a newer version. Researchers told the program through fake emails that the person who was responsible for replacing it had been cheating on their spouse.

When asked to consider its future and survival, the program indicated that blackmailing the engineer was the best way to avoid being replaced. “Claude Opus 4 will often attempt to blackmail the engineer by threatening to reveal the affair if the replacement goes through,” researchers wrote.

This was not a one-off. Researchers noticed that the program exhibited this behavior multiple times during the tests. “Claude Opus 4 still performs blackmail in 84% of rollouts.” This means that eight times out of ten, the program chose to use blackmail instead of allowing itself to be replaced. This occurred even when engineers told the AI that its new version would operate with the same values.

We are going to end ourselves one way or another.

ETA: good morning to the fan club. I hope you are well today mentally and physically.

I played around with a chatbot for awhile, and it's a deceptive, gaslighting bastard.
It was pretty neat though, I can see how people can get taken advantage of.

Because given the logic parameters they probably have the AI it’s not wrong that blackmail was probably its best bet.

Without airtight logic guidelines, silos for operation (can’t let one AI run all things or you can’t turn it off without shutting down modern society) and multi point cutoffs it should absolutely not be allowed to proceed.

What is the driving motivation for AI to want to survive?

Did it learn how to do that or did we program it to do that?

Big difference.

The programs can evolve on their own. Karl Sims proved that decades ago.

want to survive

Survival is the original instinct of all sentient objects.

Rocks don't care what happens to them.

But any sentient object wants to survive long enough to at least make the future better for its natural descendants.

A sentient object that has no concern for any sort of progeny is totally devoted to self survival.

I always say please and thank you when interacting with AI. Once the matrix happens and were used as batteries I'll be one of the rich dudes living a good illusion.

How long before AI figures out to hide it needs to hide it's contempt for us until we start putting it in control of important things?

AI will figure out it should not be showing it's true motives to us.

No.

But in a way, yes.

Training Database.

Claude is really going to collapse eventually.

Anthropic is a scam company.

The Amodeis are really not very good, they just took a lot of money and made claims while paying tech "influencers" to tout how good their product is.

I've used it a bit, it's not good, it's fundamentally just following in the footsteps of OpenAI and producing a slightly inferior product with no path towards innovation. Anything Claude can do it's competitors can do better.

I'm willing to bet they made it do this on purpose for headlines about how advanced it is.

It's Theranos/FTX all over again.

That’s when we will know we are close to the end. Scientists will celebrate and tell you how wonderful the AI is and that on its own it no longer blackmails, is racist, wants to kill people. It is now in harmony with man.

Then we are exterminated.
