Not only was it the norm, it was a status quo when Trump himself negotiated the USMCA. Trump had all the opportunity in the world to address these specific issues in 2020 but decided against it.

So you agree they are issues that needed to be addressed.

Good

They were addressed. Canada was intransigent.

No.
What you said is de facto affirmative action is fine for our trade partners (at our expense)

Canada's military is so small they would have problems against just our Salvation Army.

In all seriousness though, I have to wonder how much more socialism and influx/importation of Indians (dot, not feather) Canadians can take before they go full France on their government.

That doesn’t address OPs problem that Canada will be a cooperating nation with China. Also, almost 50% of Canada is foreign or second gen foreign. They will try to grow to 100 million using immigration.
We have a long border undefended wth them.

A war with Canadia would look like the McNeese game.

Watch Stanford try to play Notre Dame Saturday. It will make McNeese vs. LSU look like high drama.

I love this line of reasoning

We start an unnecessary trade war with one of our closest allies and largest trading parners

Instead of acquiescing, they look for other options, which is their right (and what they would have never done prior to the US starting an unnecessary trade war with them)

Then we start literally saber-rattling at our bad plan being exposed

It would have been a lot cheaper and +EV to just admit the errors. Could have been solved with a phone call months ago

You're dumb. Not worth the effort to explain the situation. Why would we concede anything to a weaker nation on our border that has been taking advantage of the US for decades?
Rhetorical question....

Why should a smaller dependent nation concerning trade dictate terms favorable to themselves.
Unnecessary is ridiculous term to use.
We asked nicely at first you seem to willingly forget. We had met multiple times with Canada to avoid all this.

This has happened in a hurry. But if they invite the Chinese in right on our border, they are in trouble. That is a direct provocation. We can play any misdeeds they do against them and the EU. The EU won't function without our partnership. And then there is NATO. We can probably have them kicked out if they are working against our interests.
If they tried to build some defense relationship with China, not good.
They are trying to spite us. It won't come to war unless they persist.
I don't like them. And they don't like us or at least more than half don't like those Pavlovian response dogs.

Well you're engaging in framing there. I'll let you figure out which part.

Even given your dishonest framing, are we better off with that scenario OR less efficient and profitable trade with Canada while they both enrich China with this trade AND allow China's influence into our continent?
