Which is odd. Don’t they all equally have 552$ in their accounts?! Isn’t that what a socialist country is?

That's the "official" exchange rate from the Central Bank of Russia.

Trading of the dollar and euro has been suspended so the exchange rate is meaningless.

The story I linked says the OTC trading, which is a "gray market" kind of trading, has the dollar's exchange rate between 120 and 200 rubles to $1.

lol, I’m not a finance guy; however, if trading is shut down then $88.43 might as well be $55.00 or $255.00 because there is no trading going on.

It’s like going to Sammy’s for boiled crawfish at $5.00 a pound and they are out. Does it matter if they were less than all the other outlets?

The Russian apologists want Russia to win and the West to lose, they won’t accept any news unless it’s favorable to Russia.

Like most issues, there is probably some truth to it but not as severe as Big Brothers narrative.
We've been seeing these types of reports since sanctions were imposed. Another day in the MSM world.

Truth...with one small edit, there's no OFFICIAL trading going on.

The Central Bank of Russia (CBR) suspended all trading of the USD and the euro since 6/13 when the U.S. and Europe put the latest round of sanctions on Russia.

There's unofficial trading happening, meaning private parties can trade without using the CBR's trading system.

The same thing happened in August, 1998 when I was working in Moscow and the Yeltsin government announced it was defaulting on Russian sovereign debt and the Central Bank was suspending defending the ruble.

The ruble dropped from 6 to the dollar on Sunday night when the announcement was made to 16 to the dollar on Monday morning.

Russians who went to bed on Sunday night with $100 worth of rubles in their pocket woke up Monday morning with only $37 worth of rubles.

Lines outside of banks on Monday morning were out the doors and into the streets.

I understand.

The local “bookies” will give you odds on anything.

Even if the 88 dollars was available, that’s still 60% higher than the $55.00 when the SO began and sanctions started.

Who here would like to see their purchasing power in certain goods decrease 60%?

That's the reason most Russians sell their rubles to buy dollars and euros almost as soon as they get paid. At least when I was there.

I could always tell the day when the government paid pensions because every currency exchange kiosk in the city would have elderly people lined up to get rid of their rubles and obtain dollars. Some currency exchanges would run out of dollars on those days and they'd have to close until they could get a delivery of dollar currency bills.

The U.S. Treasury Dept once announced there were more $100 bills in circulation in Russia than there was in the U.S.

Treasury would fly pallets of hundred dollar bills into Moscow to be delivered to the CBR.

EDIT: There's a scene in one of the Jason Bourne movies where Bourne (Matt Damon) comes out of a train station in Moscow (the train station was the Kiev Station which was across the street from the apartment where I was staying) and walks up to a scrum of taxi drivers standing around waiting for fares.

Bourne hands one of the drivers a piece of paper and says, in Russian, (who knew Matt Damon is fluent in Russian???) "Can you take me to this address?"

The driver replies, "Will you pay in rubles or dollars?"

Bourne answers, "Dollars."

The driver says, "De'vai" which means "Let's go."

What's not said is that if Bourne had told the driver he was going to pay in rubles, the driver would likely have told him to frick off.
