It has been done before.
Yeah, but I can see Dems taking the House and calling for impeachment over war crimes. I guess they'll impeach for something else, though, if not for this, but impeach, they will. Zero doubt in my mind.

Maybe partly, but I think these “talks” we are seeing are mainly for the countries in the ME to show we are “trying” to find a diplomatic solution. But we know Iran is not at the point of being ready to agree so we play along.

I don’t understand how current bombing shows that talks are not ongoing. That’s exactly what usually happens. The bombing would not stop until an agreement was reached, or was so close to being finalized that the parties decide to show good faith.

The Japanese were so hard headed that we had to Nuke 2 of their cities to get them to capitulate.

And the majority of their leaders still wanted the war to continue. At some point the enemy decides it is better to die fighting than to surrender and the Middle East has been past that point for a long time.

Trump needs to be cautious that he doesn't attack any purely civilian power plants as this falls into war crimes under the Geneva Convention agreement if it's not also a primary source of power for the military.

This is the root of my problem. To me, it is folly to even think that a fundamentalist regime like Iran would ever 'surrender' in any form that we normally associate with that word.

Their faith celebrates death in fighting in their holy war as a worthy goal = mean instant 72 virgins, etc.

I Think we have to eliminate the leadership figures until we get down to a conscript level mentality = someone who is only onboard under pressure, not a deep belief.

They may accept but won’t abide by the terms.

The only acceptable outcome is complete surrender.

The regime has repeatedly shown the are not bound by the promises they’ve made in their various agreements.

How can anyone downvote this? It is factually accurate.

Agreed Chinese. I think you will find the vast majority of the rank and file of the irgc, when they realize they are going to lose power, will remember they have to live in that country when its all over and just say, screw this.

I saw a video of some "soldiers" who first came upon the sight after the US had left the extraction site.

Our media loved to show the burn out c130s. This video showed the soldiers astonished at the carnage the US had left behind (I guess seeing bodies after a warthog visit will do that to you). It was a "what the fck have we gotten into reaction). We arent facing little girls without jihabs that we can beat to death anymore.

The IRGC would willingly and publicly execute every single Iranian that isn't a member of leadership or the IRGC before surrendering. The only way this ends is completely wiping out the IRGC leadership structure, including low level leadership.

I think they’ve known for a while there’s no chance of true negotiations and this gives them cover to destroy the infrastructure.

Firing typically ceases after ceasefires, not before them FYI.

Israel might be the ones to bomb the bridges and plants.

I made this comparison yesterday in a talk with my dad.

Irans regime won’t voluntarily surrender. Japan wasn’t hardcore religious like the mullahs but their culture didn’t allow for surrender. It’s the same principle. We are going to have to not just defeat them but rather completely break them.

I am afraid we are going to have to go to the wall on this one. These are not rational people. It’s going to be painful for everyone involved.

The fight isn't against a typical "regime". It's against an ideology. It's against Islamic civilization. There's no "leaving them in charge" and expecting change. They're willing to die for their cause, and they're willing to let tens of millions of innocent subjects die along with them for their cause.

I think what Trump is struggling with right now, is the total gravity of the situation and the realization that you would literally have to kill every single islamist and the innocent human shields they'll use to protect themselves, in order for things to change. Again, the fight isn't against a regime. It's against a theocratic civilization that has existed for 1600 years.

He will delay it with a lie... We have made progress on imaginary talks and I choose to postpone because I am an awesome guy.

If there are real cease fire talks I think Trump goes that option
