Only reason he said it is because the story is negative to their own personal political narrative.
It was an implied (and rather obvious) analogy to the 2nd Amendment opponents who assert that "guns" kill people, rather than the persons weilding those firearms.

I remember in 2016 he waited until about a month before the election to say he was voting Trump. He would straddle the fence up to that point.
