The best way to break up a mob, was to find the “mouth” or the ones with the megaphones and beat the shittt out of them. Usually the mob would disperse.
Police need to try this is situations like this.
And apparently some of these French police have the balls that the Brit police have had cut off.

Followers and leaders, no different than any other situation. A team, a company or a protest all need that leader and the more charismatic leader the more influence they carry. Let that crack show and it breaks up. So your buddy was absolutely correct

How specifically has France been our greatest ally?
Even their “right wing populist” movement is basically Bernie Sanders level socialism and their yellow vest protests from a few years ago were socialists wanting more time off.
France is different and even when they helped us against Britain it was only as part of their proxy war against them, not because the bourbon monarchy had some great love for the classical liberal values of democracy and the founding fathers.
In fact they feared them and were absolutely right to as later events showed in their own horrible revolution and the napoleonic wars that followed.

Humans are pack animals and the “great man” theory of history is basically true.
Which is why your cop friend is more or less correct: if you break the alpha of a group the group loses power far beyond that one person and often crumbles.
