Revealing that there was an investigation,would destroy their "insurance policy" in the very unlikely event that Trump got elected.
Ya see, in the very unlikely event that Trump was elected, they needed a way to make sure he either was never inaugurated or was impeached as the result of an investigation by another Deep State operative.....ya know, an "insurance policy".

What is more believable; “trump is trying to win by colluding with Russians” or “trump won by colluding with Russians.
This investigation doesn’t make any sense. Breaking it out before the election would have just been out of place. They haven’t been able to explain what he did, so what exactly would have been the story during the election?
This was the ammo for after the election. They fired plenty shots before it.

This is another good observation with regard to timing. It would have been too obvious what they were attempting. Releasing this so close to the election, right after publicly clearing HRC, would send up red flags in the electorate. Keep in mind, we already learned that the establishment had fixed the DNC primary against the other anti-establishment candidate. If they went out and appeared to put their thumb on the scale for HRC for a third time even more people sick of this establishment b.s. would have come out for Trump.

The FBI had (according to Trump supporters) done all this highly illegal stuff, and all they had to do was make a tiny leak, and all of their transgressions would have been buried forever. But, they decided instead to risk it all.
