That settles it, he’s definitely missing a lot.

eta: his best strategy moving forward is to continue attacking Rummy.

Each of my kids got $250 from Mike and Susan Dell. They don’t get the govt money but free money is free money. Plus they’ll have a head start on retirement when I convert their accounts to Roths at 18.

You sound like a chatty drama queen. Calling someone dumb then capitulating within 5 posts like OP said. At least see if the thread goes to 2-3 pages before you look like an idiot calling someone stupid then having to retreat. I agree that you are soft as charmin.

You know what's worse...

Starting a thread under one account and then defending yourself from your other account.

Don’t intervene too soon Rummy, it’s fun watching them dig their own graves.

I'll just say it. This is a vote grab. Couple this with DJT's $5k dangling carrot of R's sweeping both Houses, the guy is not even trying to hide it anymore.

So you called me dumb in the rush to be the 1st poster and then you capitulate and agree that a 17 year old won't benefit much if at all? Wow, this might be a record for message boards in terms of Crawfishing.

Some of them certainly will benefit from it though

Rich philantrophists have donated seed money to help boost some of these accounts (Michael Dell and his wife for example)

I would see someone like Warren Buffet contributing some of his wealth to something like this when he passes on.

In the absolute worst of worst scenarios for an individual where nothing is contributed then it becomes a completely neutral event. For those that can get some funds in there when they're 16-18 good for them. Whether it comes from a high school job or a gift from family that would be a good thing. This could be a good gift for if your kid makes the honor roll or something. I can see plenty of scenarios where smart people will use this to help younger people in their family.

That is the move.

To the OP’s point, if the kid is already 16 or 17, they aren’t going to get the starter check and there won’t be time for much return before they turn 18. Just start them out with the Roth and let it go from there. OP’s point is actually good observation. But the Trump thing isn’t really for 16 or 17 year olds to start. At 18 it’s either a standard IRA, with withdraws taxed, or it’s converted to a Roth to grow long term for tax free withdrawals. With late teen kids, the better move is just open the Roth and have them max contributions.

The difference is the Trump accounts are real and not a single serious person believes the 5K will ever come to fruition

I'm as critical of Trump as anyone else but the Trump accounts are absolutely a great idea. We may come to a day where we need to means test social security benefits. If we have people from upper middle class families who have been putting in a few thousand a year since the day those kids were born they'll have a huge head start on retirement and could be some of the people not taking from the system.

This can already be done through a 529 account and a qualified transfer to a Roth down the line.

I'll ask again, let's see if you care to answer. A 17-yr old currently in the year 2026 is being auto enrolled into a Trump account with no money being deposited into it. Why would said 17-yr old want this account with $0 in perpetuity since their is no seed money from the government?

Why not?
