7 arrested in $800K smoke detector theft ring that targeted Florida Home Depot stores
Were they building a dirty bomb, or were they selling them, and to whom?

Seven suspects have been arrested in connection with a massive theft ring involving more than $800,000 worth of smoke detectors stolen from Home Depot stores across Florida, authorities said.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier held a news conference Tuesday to announce the arrests following a months-long investigation by Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement.
Investigators discovered at least 44 smoke detector thefts at Home Depot stores in 17 Florida counties including Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and elsewhere.
Home Depot estimated the losses at over $800,000, Uthmeier said.
Around $78,000 worth of stolen merchandise was found at a storage unit in Hillsborough County, and another $300,000 worth of products tied to the theft ring were found at a warehouse in Houston, Texas.
The suspects - Willie Hendry Delmarta Marquis Harvin, Earl Choyce Gordon II, Charles McCloud Jr., Eduardo Franco Viruet, Dwight Rachard Mosby, Eugene Rohala Oneal, and Hermis Brayan Martinez Sierra - face charges including organized retail theft, conspiracy to commit racketeering, and dealing in stolen property.
Uthmeier said the suspects share a combined total of over 170 previous charges between them.

The twitter replies were glorious... mostly about batteries and chirping.
But seriously, wtf.... that's some nefarious stuff right there.

That group doesn't exactly look like villain masterminds.

They are obviously the victims of the system here. All I see are good men here.

I never would have assumed those men were in it for the radiation potential. Makes me wonder who the buyer is or buyers are?
How soon should they be waterboarded for more information regarding the radiation potential of their stolen merchandise?

Yea and for them to have the products warehoused all the way in Houston, someone else put them up to it.

Home Depot stopped selling ionization smoke alarms in store over a year ago.
Even then - this band of miscreants is neither good enough nor bad enough to do something nefarious with the detectors they're alleged to have boosted.

Masterminds don't do the dirty work...

Young Sheldon Cooper is the mastermind behind this.

When a group of mostly black guys are stealing smoke detectors, the stereotype joke has already written itself twice.

Maybe they're a band of Robin Hoods who are going to steal from Home Depot and distribute the loot among "the community" to solve their collective chirp problem.
Anecdotal: As I type this, you can hear the neighbors' detector across the street go off ever 30 seconds, thanks to the downstairs window they have cracked open.

Yep...all in-store smoke detectors are photoelectric. You can only buy ionization smoke detectors from Home Depot via delivery.

Which would make them pretty difficult to shoplift, in that instance.
Whatever this brain trust had planned, it wasn't The Sum of All Fears.

Exactly..."who is loading up smoke detectors with Americium sources? Well, they live at 2313 Nutbird Street, or at least that's where they had them delivered...and the credit card they used was from a Hugh Dumas."
