fair share? skin in the game?

57% of U.S. households paid no federal income tax last year as Covid took a toll, study says

More than half of American households paid no federal income tax last year due to Covid-relief funds, tax credits and stimulus, according to a new report.
The nonpartisan Tax Policy Center estimates that 57% of U.S. households paid no federal income taxes for 2021, up substantially from the 44% before the pandemic.
Since most workers pay payroll taxes, the share of Americans who pay neither payroll nor federal income taxes was only 19% in 2021, slightly higher than the 17% rate before the pandemic.

This is absurd. The middle class is funding everything at this point.

Losing the 20% qualified business deduction this year really nailed a bunch of our small business clients this year. Lets just say the checks were pain.

It’s unsustainable. At some point the entire system will collapse.

This can’t be good for the economy going forward.

I fear when the govt stops printing free money to keep the economy afloat we going to have a deep depression.

This could be why the government seems so determined to start a war with Russia.

I'm OK with 0% paying income taxes.

Make everything usage / sales tax based.

How much of that is because one or both spouses are unemployed?

I’ve been employed through this whole clusterfrick but Mrs Teke got laid off during Covid and the nature of her job meant there were only so many spots for that available in our geographic area. And we can’t move for a variety of reasons.

Not to say there aren’t a lot of people freeloading off the system but at least some of them got screwed by Fauci et all.

It pays to be a leech on the system popping out kids everyone else has to work to support and pay for their healthcare and food and surviving .

Now they’ll add gas cards to the mix too.

What’s the point of working anymore just to get taxed to death and vilified that I don’t pay enough taxes anyway to lower my expectations .

Flat tax. It's the only way. Every citizen should pay in something.

Irony, those that pay the least, or nothing, get the most government services. Those that pay the most have the influence to have government working on their side. Those in the middle get the bill and the least in return.

Which is why the attempts by the left to destroy the middle class are so self-defeating if the idea is to preserve their current system.

There are too many takers at the bottom and not enough high earners at the top to pay for everything without a solid middle to shoulder the load.

Crashing the system and replacing it with elites on top and a huge range of serfs on the bottom? This can get you there but the serfs here are well armed.

Paying federal income taxes is not the determinant factor for having "skin in the game".
