Why is modern gun deer season in Arkansas so much shorter than Louisiana ?

Think Arkansas has longer seasons for other methods. Plus a resident license gets you 6 deer, 2 turkey, and a bear tag for $35...

Arkansas is trying to improve their deer herd while LA and MS are trying to decimate theirs

Numbers and quality are two totally different things. Nobody argues that Mississippi deer herd has numbers

I was just stating the fact that the state of Mississippi is a success story for repopulation and maintaining a healthy deer population that gives hunters an ample amount of meat supply for their families throughout the year. There are some very nice bucks in MS if you hunt the right places. If I knew how to post pictures I’d show you some that I have gotten over the years. I grew up in Ocean Springs but was born and raised to the age of 10 in LA. I live in Texas now and my family owns a 400 acre farm in NW Arkansas. I’ll be bow hunting two properties I have access to in MS week of Oct 19th looking for a couple giants. I have access to property in many states and I’m choosing to bow hunt two properties MS this year with my limited time. It’s all about location in MS.

Edit: I had 4 points this year for Kansas and did not get a tag, but admittedly if I had got one I would be bow hunting there.

Before I bought land in MS I was in a club in SE ARkansas. The short season perfectly coincided with their rut and I filled the freezer every year and saw/shot way more bucks than I do in MS. I think their short rifle season helps hunting overall.

Louisiana probably has one of the better deer management systems in the country, not saying is the best but better than most. It is important to keep a deer herd below half of the carrying capacity for deer health. Deer density gets lost when people start thinking that Louisiana is to liberal with its gun season. There is plenty of upper age class bucks in Louisiana we aren’t Iowa we will not 180” bucks on every 40 acres. Piney woods and closed canopy forests aren’t the best at growing huge racks.

MS liberal deer season and bag limits have nothing to do with giving the hunter amble supply of deer meat. They are scared to death of CWD and the future of the herd, needing it kept in check helps, and insurance lobbist . There are areas of the state that would blow your mind the amount of money that is paid due to deer. My drive is about 30 miles one way. I see over a dozen each way. From Nov to Feb, that doubles.

because they are not stupid like us. They actually like having a decent deer population over most of the state.
