When do you plant your food plots?

I have about 60 acres of family land in Avoyelles parish. Mostly a bottom and we recently got water control to help direct water to allow us to use it better for deer. We get good deer on camera every year but mostly just passing through or eating acorns. It’s July and I’m getting texts from family in IL that they are planting fields (beans) and some plots. I got the itch for deer season. Everything is so green now. I got a buddy about 20 miles from me who doesn’t plant until September. How about y’all?

Too late for a summer plot too early for a fall plot, we plant our fall plots first 2 weekends of October , much earlier and you run the chance of army worms, much later and fall rains set in and too sloppy to get a tractor in

SELA last week of sept or the first two weeks in Oct but always try to get it right in front of a cool front and the rain that comes with it.
We plant a mix of oats wheat and elbon rye with clover put in it we then top seed clover again in late February. Plots still have clover in them right now

I used to plant Labor Day and thought I had good plots until I got behind and planted in October. My plots are so much better that I realize my old plots didn’t do much.

mid september for fall plot but talk to neighbors. I always support a fellow farmer... best of luck to you!

And by good rain forecast it means plant in the fricking rain. Learned that the hard way

It's easy to get excited and carried away and plant early (Late August, September) while not saying it won't work it allows more room for failure.
Remember most of your food plot plants are more cooler temperature plants and do better when it's not 100 degrees. Late September and early October tends to be very dry, and obviously hot and often driest times of the year. I normally plant the week/weekend closest to October 15 and it has worked well for me for years.

I hunt Avoyelles/Saint Landry. Been planting for years and have the best results doing so in October. Watch the forecast and go from there.

Tensas parish, mid October. We got summer beans plots coming up nice so I'm not in a hurry.

Whenever I plant it I can guarantee a 2 month drought starts the next week!

First weekend in October. Unless there is no rain in the forecast for awhile then I wait another week or so.
I've got relatives that plant earlier in the year and then they usually end up watching the dirt for awhile till it rains.

About two or three years ago I was tilling up dust to plant when the sky opened up and turned the field into the slurry. Just a total mess. Hardest rain I had ever been stuck in outside. Almost didn't get the tractor out of there. Could barely see it was raining so hard. Was the last food plot to plant for the day and wanted to get it done since I was already soaked to the bone. Fertilizer wanting to clump up in the spreader. Paper bags of seed started to disintegrate. Just threw the clothes I was wearing away.
Made one beautiful food plot tho.
