Is there a reason why a possum would just keel over dead?

I found a dead possum in my yard, and there are no signs of injury.

Only guess would be a fall.

TIA.

New information...

To discard of the carcass today...

I flipped it over, and it was as unmarked as the other side.

YET...it had poop near its but.

I think poison wins!!!

Thanks again!

Saw the same thing a couple months ago at my place.

Scooped him up and went to throw him into what I thought was a little wooded area behind a high fence behind my house. Didn’t hear a crash into brush, only a “fwomp!”

Think I chucked him into someone’s back yard. Not my finest moment.

Oppossums live forever until someone shoots them.

Maybe rat poison, or some sort of natural death. Possums prefer to reach Valhalla honorably, by way of a nice set of BF Goodrich's, but they do sometimes die of other causes.

We had one that had distemper in our subdivision. Had to call Animal Control to keep the local wives from going crazy. I don't know if distemper can kill a possum or not.

Rabies

'Possums seem to be basically immune to rabies. It's EXTREMELY rare for them to get it.

They also suck the lyme disease out of ticks - curing the ticks and not getting it themselves. Thus, making ticks safer for you and me.

The incredible, edible, possum.

Nah.... not from a fall. Had one on my fence(7 foot)and I pushed it off with a stick into the yard next door. Just walked away.
Someone could have hit it and it had internal injury. Maybe it was poisoned.

If you want a live one..... I caught one last night. You could have it! Guess I'll take a drive and release it later.

just playing possum? They usually aren't really dead until you put that bullet in the back of the head. My dog tossed one around like crazy, it was bleeding and missing half it's hide before I could get him to drop it. It just laid there, then he did that good death squirm when I put that .22 bullet in him.
