re: Which of these two AR15s would you buy?
Posted by 4X4DEMON on 11/9/17 at 3:49 pm
I have a delton sport with the pencil barrel and flat top forward assist upper. It's been a great rifle since I've had it. Wish I'd have gotten the m4 profile barrel though

I know the man who shot it, ive hunted there before. You can set your watch for when the deer are going to show up. IMO, its Not really hunting if you can wait on a feeder to go off and shoot a deer under it while its inside hog panels.
Pretty funny given your sig quote

Can't find it right now, but some study was done on this, and it was found that deer actually investigated human urine more often than deer urine
I would assume just out of curiosity. To me if they smell deer urine, they know "Oh that bitch Tina was over here" vs "Who dat been pissin over there?" with human urine

Sometime I get pretty "mad at 'em", but its hard to fathom being so die hard that I starve myself down and hold in my farts while near dehydration. You do whatever you like man, I'm gonna have a cup coffee.
It's not like I'm starving and dry as cotton, I just don't eat food that has a proven track record of making me need to shite and I don't drink anything. I've given up coffee on the regular because the caffeine or something in it just messes me up. All I drink on regular days is water or un-sweet tea and I eat a fairly natural food, high protein low carb diet.
Still though, when I took my son hunting the other day my bag was loaded with cookies and juice. I'm not going to torture him with my hunting style.

If they seem fazed by it or not, I'd rather not leave any trace that I'm there. I will intentionally run on a calorie deficit and near de-hydration to avoid leaving any trace other than foot prints. Hunting as high as I can and doing my best to hunt the wind. What bugs me about hunting the wind is that deer, at least in my areas, seem to come out from everywhere so I never really "know" if I'm going to be upwind or down wind.

Same. I cringe when I think back to how I cared for kids at work and would take smoke breaks and think scented lotion and mouthwash covered the smell, not even thinking how much my scrubs may have stank.
One time right before I quit, and one reason I did, I had a patient beg me to take him outside for a smoke because he could smell it on me and knew I was a smoker. I hated to tell him no but I wasn't about to get in trouble for that shite

Probably already stated, but as a previous smoker, no I had no idea until after I quit and was around other smokers.
re: Bow Hunting - distance for pins
Posted by 4X4DEMON on 10/24/17 at 1:23 pm
I have the trophy ridge site with smart pin technology or whatever it is. It's set 20,30,40,50 and 60. I practice in the 30-40 range, but I also practice elevated close shots at 15 too because that downward angle will have an effect on impact location.

re: Pic in OP How do you keep an 8yo quiet and still in the stand. Update with first deer.
Posted by 4X4DEMON on 10/23/17 at 12:56 pm
It took a while for me to really learn that kids will be kids and making noise is just part of that. You just have to breathe and relax. Try to insulate them from the world outside the stand as much as possible. No cokes and try not to give too much sugar. Also, in my experience avoid Matador beef jerky, that shite stinks. My 9yo shot his first deer on youth weekend, my 11yo just doesn't care about hunting. The drive to be there is what will motivate them to be still more than anything.

re: Deer Processing

I've done my own in the past, but like you time is hard to come by. It's just easier and worth it to use a processor, imo.
re: DIY red or green feeder lights for pigs
Posted by 4X4DEMON on 10/17/17 at 5:04 pm
I've never really "measured" how long it stays on, but its a while. Again, this is a malfunction as it used to only light up for a minute or so after something would move in front of the sensor.

Great video and great buck. Congrats to your dad. I arrowed two hogs so far. My 9yo shot a doe this past Saturday with the rifle.

I've got the motion activated lights by my carport that uses the solar recharging batteries. It puts off enough light to see and was thinking of running them around feed piles/ feeders after deer season for this reason. They were very cheap and have lasted really well. The switch that turns it off after a few seconds has gone out on one though so once it comes on it just runs until it's dead. Which is actually a lot longer than you'd think, runs for hours before batteries are dead. It's two or three years old though.

My ex-bro in law hunts over around delhi. He says they are thick over there. Over grown raccoons is what he calls them.
re: When is the best time to plant a food plot for bow season?
Posted by 4X4DEMON on 10/16/17 at 11:53 am
I planted a mixture of winter peas, soy beans, and chicory this year early September and it hasn't rained a damn drop. Only in a few spots do I have any small amount of germination. Thinking about doing it in August next year.
re: Cell phones in the deer stand
Posted by 4X4DEMON on 10/16/17 at 11:48 am
I use my phone, but only periodically through the day. Texting other hunting buddies, fb, hunting apps. I don't really play games on it anyway. I missed an opportunity on a doe a few years ago because of a damn app ad and I thought I had the sound turned off. I was wrong. My kid killed his first deer Saturday and I had to take the phone out of his hand for him to shoot it. It keeps him more still than all the fidgeting he'd be doing without it.
