U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum issued an order in January directing multiple agencies to remove what he termed "unnecessary regulatory or administrative barriers" to hunting and fishing and justify regulations they want to keep in place. "Expanding opportunities for the public to hunt and fish on Department-managed lands not only strengthens conservation outcomes, but also supports rural economies, public health, and access to America's outdoor spaces," Burgum wrote. "The Department's policy is clear: public and federally managed lands should be open to hunting and fishing unless a specific, documented, and legally supported exception applies."

Managers at various locations have already lifted prohibitions on hunting stands that damage trees and training hunting dogs, using vehicles to retrieve animals and hunting along trails,

The hunting season in the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts, for example, would be extended through the spring and summer. Hunters in the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area in Texas would be allowed to clean their kills in bathrooms. And hunters would be allowed to kill alligators in the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in Louisiana. An effort to save hunting? Burgum's order comes as hunting continues to decline in the face of increasing urbanization. Only about 4.2% of the U.S. population identified as a hunter older than 16 in 2024, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Census data, leaving state wildlife agencies short on revenue from license sales and excise taxes on guns and ammunition.

I guess I agree with a lot of them. But

sounds like not a good plan.

The opposition is going to FREAK OUT.

Meanwhile if you've ever been to a more popular national park like Great Smokies, you know the average park visitor DGAF and litters everywhere and drives everywhere anyway. If we truly cared about the parks we would stay out of them.

I've done swamp tours there twice, there's no shortage of alligators.

When will he open Kisatchie National Forest to the same regulations as private land?? It would only help the deer population and let us enjoy what we're paying for.

This allows for conservation specific hunting on federal and state parks that sometimes get overpopulated. State DWFs end up paying money to manage wildlife that could have been managed by hunters generating revenue instead of costing Wildlife conservation resources.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens to the local National Wildlife Refuges in Louisiana - in my case the SE Louisiana Complex.

If reading it closely, it seems that the Fed may roll back the limited season dates and align them with the State Seasons. In that case, Delta NWR/BigBranch may be open 7 days a week for ducks. Same goes for deer on Bogue Chitto.

Could be interesting times.

That would be horrible for the waterfowl hunting

They need to sell bear tags in Great Smoky mnt nat. park. they are overpopulated and not intimidated by humans. There needs to be a culling.

The NWRs in Cenla used to be great for bow hunting, then they opened them up to lottery rifle hunts and open muzzleloader hunts. Even with this minimal level of gun hunting, Lac Ophelia NWR and Bayou Cocodrie NWR are barely better than WMAs now. Deer populations are low and pigs are everywhere. Allowing an open rifle season will just make things worse.

None of this is going to bring up hunter numbers. Fewer kids are interested in hunting in any form. Travel ball for kids and young adults moving to more urban places lessens the old connections with the land, so hunter recruitment is down.

And 43 million acres of the 51 million mentioned in Alaska allow subsistence hunting as required per ANILCA. With the dispute over jurisdictional waters most area allowing residents of Alaska to hunt and not just the rural areas near them that were traditionally the only ones qualified to hunt in those areas.

Yeah, alot of people will celebrate this, but if they don't at least have some restrictions, these places will be terrible very quickly.

Public lands need to have more restrictions on them than private. There needs to be a balance between true "refuge" and hunting (i.e., we shouldn't have 100k acre NWRs where hunting is prohibited). But I suspect this administration is going to overcorrect and have it wide open.

This feels like a subversive way to pass management off to the states, then claim that "well they are doing a great job 'managing' the land, so why should the federal government maintain ownership?"

I was going to post the same thing, but didn't want the slew of downvotes. Personally, I've never deer hunted public land, but i think it should be available to those who want to.

That seems very low as a guy from the south, but I guess that's where we are as a nation.

This is slowly happening

There is a proposed bill from Bill Cassidy to transfer the Kisatchie lands in Grant Parish to the police jury

It is available.

It just doesnt have the rifle season that private does, and for good reason--if you had the same rifle season on KNF as you do in Area 2, those deer would be getting hammered by every Tom, Dick, and Harry for 2.5 months.

You wouldn't have a deer herd very long if you did that.
