It's a logical question and I've kicked around the idea numerous times before, when I upgrade to pedal driven I've set a budget of around $2000-$2400 and plan to stick to it. Once you get into the $3000+ range you're in Gheenoe territory. I want a Gheenoe eventually but plan to still keep the kayak.

For me, a kayak is an in addition to article, not a one or the other. There are times I want to yak, and times I want to boat.

There is a fine line that some do not want to cross. Motor, gas, registration, trailer, hubs, wheels, storage, etc.

Kayak is plug and play, virtually maintenance free.

The ability to throw in the back of my truck, little to no maintenance, no gas, skinny waters, great clubs, no state registration, etc......

Like others have said a boat has a time and place no doubt
and there's been more than 1 trip where I've thought "wtf was I thinking buy this" but then all is forgotten when its just you and a small cut of perfectly calm clear water (that no boat could go down) its so quiet, you crack a beer and then boom that red pulls you around for 5 mins and all is right with the world
you cant get that in a boat my man

Absolutely! I have a decent bay boat, but have not put it in the water since before hunting season. I've been out in the yak four times since Christmas catching bass and sometimes reds. I could live happily with just a kayak.

I took the old $400 kayak out yesterday and pieced together a limit of crappie. I hear these things taste pretty good. Still liking my little plastic boat.

This. There are times I just want to go to Hwy 1 for the weekend and fish from the yak and there are time I want to fish the bay boat in BSL and run south as far as Chandy. Both offer their own brand of adventure. The last year or so I’ve really gravitated to the yak thing.

I have a bass boat and a kayak. There are times and places for both. And they both get used frequently.

I remember when I bought my boat, I couldn’t tell you how many people asked if I was gonna sell my kayak now that I had a boat. I told them heck no, I love fishing out of the kayak and it’ll get me places my boat can’t go. In 2016 when Henderson was in drawdown and no boats could get to certain areas, I took the kayak and mopped up the bass. It wasn’t even fair! But I had it all to myself. It was the most fun I had fishing in a long time. One day I think I caught a dozen over 3 lbs, a couple 4’s, and the biggest bass I ever pulled out of Henderson at 5.44 lbs. All while just floating around with an ice chest full of white cans.

Now, I know I’d have to register it. But I’ve been thinking about putting a trolling motor on it. I really would love to upgrade to a Titan or something like that. But it’s just simply not in the budget right now. I’d love to have it cause some of the more secluded bayous I fish require some long paddles. If I can just use the trolling motor for the long runs and paddle the rest of the time, that would be plenty ok by me. I can probably do that for about $300. As opposed $3k+ for a fancy peddle yak.

For me, I've been kayak fishing for 5-6 years now. I absolutely love it, but my back doesn't. I started developing bad sciatic pain and it's gotten to the point where my back and right thigh are just absolutely on fire at about 10am. The paddle back is miserable and even the drive home is terrible. I have a history of lower back problems and it seems they've not started to affect my kayak fishing. Sucks.

I really like the versatility of the kayaks. I can take it to a small bayou around the house, to big lake to fish for specks and reds or even go off shore with it when we go on our annual trip to Destin, Fl. Only thing I need to do is load it up and put it in my truck and be on my way.

I get it.
I love pirogue, canoe, and kayak fishing in ponds and such for bass and crappie.
Marsh fishing in paddle boats I have yet to do.

Water surface temps were in the low 40's. The fish were, believe it or not, out on the flats in about 6 feet of water. They seemed to just be scattered everywhere with no real rhyme or reason. I started out fishing trees in a much deeper creek. I only caught three keepers there in over two hours of fishing even though the bait was stacked in there so thick it covered half the depth on my fish finder. After I moved out to the flats, the fishing picked up, even though there was a lot less shad.

I had a similar success story not long ago in a nearby lake. If I had not seen people catching, I would have never fished that shallow.

That's pretty much what happened. There are always boats spider rigging out there if the weather is ok. Most days they just troll around everywhere and end up trying the creek where I started. Yesterday, I noticed all the boats that went out there stayed out there and they all bunched up. After a couple hours of not catching much, I decided to join the crowd. It seemed like the wrong place for the fish to be, but it wasn't.
