A beagle is on the short list as well. I just like a bigger dog. My wife will have the beagle on the sofa more than likely

Have a GSP and a golden doodle.

The doodle is a once in a lifetime dog, we just got lucky. He's intelligent, well behaved, affectionate, protective of the kids, and in general loves people. We will likely never have a dog of that caliber again.

The GSP has definitely grown on me. He is a big loving goofball. Crazy high energy, great with kids, loves our cats too, he's just a goober. I do have 20 acres and he runs about 6-10 miles a day, so he has an outlet.

A friend has a golden doodle. Big strong dog, he's trained to get beer out of the fridge. He shuts the door too.

I've always appreciated the beauty of a GSP but couldn't tell you anything about them other than what I've read here. "They need to run"

I tried to do everything right. I brought him to Bass Pro, Pet Smart, Home Depot, all those places. I worked with 2 different dog trainers and it didn’t help.

I do not know this, but I think he was the runt of the litter. My daughter is 21 and he loves her. I’ve always heard people say they were not worried about someone’s safety because of a dog, I understand now.

if you think you want a hound, consider a bloodhound. They are the sweetest smartest most entertaining dogs I’ve ever had.

you can probably imagine the good stuff, so I’ll tell you the bad stuff

-ears, constant maintenance
-toenails, constant maintenance
-loud (you’d better want to have a conversation)
-hardheaded, they do and go where they want to go and that’s that
-sensitive, yelling or physically reprimanding won’t work
-short lived, if they get to ten you are playing house money

Best dog I have ever had was a blue healer. So smart.

For a guard dog her Pyrenees mix. No ONE will come in your house without them letting you know.

Anatolian shepherd, brings protection to a whole different level , originally from Turkey they protect goats and sheep from predators, bobcats, foxes, dogs and coyotes don’t stand a chance, wolves they are about 50/50 on, 2 legged predators not even close. They will protect thier own at all cost, and once you establish a bond with them they simply owe you thier life , to their master they are passive and loving , to everyone else they are cautious and alert, to any aggressor stupid enough to continue after their warning barks , well ….

genuinely interested in a working hound

You will need to have a job for it.

Hounds are awesome but they are slaves to their noses and instincts.

I have an 8 year old harlequin Great Dane. The greatest dog I have ever had and probably will ever have. So many things to say about her, but I got lucky enough to work in a company that I get to take her to work every day.

Have a 6 1/2 year old Catahoula. Was tough the first couple years because I didn’t have the place or time to work him enough. Great dog but hard headed as hell. An absolute blast to have around! Best camping patna I’ve ever had

“A beagle is on the short list as well.I just like a bigger dog”

I have a Redbone Coonhound(female).I used to raise beagles, lot of similarities.
Mine is a housedog, was very easy to house break.Never chewed up anything.
Main reason I wanted a house dog was because we live out in country, pretty isolated so I wanted a watchdog.I have a long driveway, soon as a car turns on our driveway she knows it and barks that would wake the dead.
Not protective at all,loves everybody.

Only thing I really use her for is to trail deer that have been shot. Most of them had a blood trail so I could have found them myself. Two of them didn’t
bleed and she trailed them fine, just a little slower. An 8 pt I shot last year I don’t think I would have ever found,

I have a wireless collar I trained her with to keep her from leaving the yard. She’s 5 now and hasn’t had the collar on for probably 6 months, never leaves the yard. She like to stay outside if it’s not too hot or cold

I’ve been happy with her.

I have 2 mini dachshunds and when I say I, I mean my wife.
They are assholes and awesome at the same time. I literally think they were made to kill badgers like they say and then I look at them and I know why the Germans lost the war. Love hate relationship with these little bastards. Don't open a cheese wrapper but I bet a thief would run before he walks across our pond at 399 yards.

All of our dogs over the past 30 years have been mutts from the pound. Lap dogs to the last of them, until somebody gets close to the yard and they go into attack mode.

I'm my experience, that's a catahoula.

Proceed.

Blue heeler. It will stop any and all threats to you and yours, could be self sustaining if needed, kills all snakes, vermin, birds that are slow to takeoff and if a polar bear shows up, I’m laying a hundred on the dog to win.

Friend has a bloodhound. Super sweet dog will sleep in the sxs all day no matter what's going on.

She loves to swim he can't keep her out of the water and that keeps everyone on edge because of the Gator population at the camp.

We bred Dachsunds as a kid. The have a lock jaw or atrong bite. Their job was to fight badgers in their hole, hunter pulls Dachsund by tail while the dog has the badgers. Awesome dogs had them with game dog pits Dachsunds can hold their own.

Redbone is a slick animal didn't really consider until reading your post. Seems they won't shed as much as the breeds I've owned. <-- am I mistaken?

The resounding gong on these from people I know is, if you want a smart and amazing dog get a blue healer.
