This is not a sympathy thread but my Pit/Plot/Cur mix of 14 years old passed a couple months ago. He didn't last long enough so I need to get another ole boy soon but not yet.

For the record I "think" I'm interested in a Catahoula but no real time experience with them. I "assume" a Catahoula would be similar in nature as my buddy that recently passed but I don't know. I spoke to the folks at Abney Catahoulas, super generous with their time. However my wife (possibly on the trading block ) isn't a fan of their colors/coat.

This isn't a Catahoula thread but certainly interested in any info y'all may have about them.

I'm genuinely interested in a working hound & have owned several generations of American Pitbulls Boudreaux/Gator blood lines with no incidents. I'm comfortable with strong willed dogs but it's not a requirement.

I appreciate any response thanks.

We rescued an older female Catahoula 2 years ago. My daughter volunteered at the Friends of the animals on Highland road to get volunteer hours for school. We came home with her. She is a great dog. Loves outside and chasing squirrels and birds. She is great around kids as well. Only negative is they shed like crazy.

Yeah we called our boy Pig-Pen as hair would explode off of him just looking in his direction.

Mine is a Cockapoo, Kiki.
She’s extremely smart and the most affectionate thing ever.

She understands:
Sit
Stay
Heel
Break
Find it

ETA and her big brown eyes will melt you. She’s a sweetheart

A client of mine has a similar standard poodle mix. His are 100 plus pounds and built like tanks.

I have a Catahoula and nobody other than immediate family is coming in my house or yard unless we allow it.

Standard poodles are also extremely intelligent, but Kiki only weighs about 35#. She’s closer to the size of a cocker spaniel.

We lost our lab who was absolutely the best dog ever last Sept. He was 14.

Prior to him dying we had already decided to get another dog. My wife had seen a bernese mountain dog at a local nursery. It was a very sweet dog but never demanded attention.

So, she found a breeder in Alabama and we put a downpayment on the puppy. We picked him up in October.

He absolutely demands attention most of the time and at 8 months old he's around 80lbs. He's a very handsome dog and has the sweetest personality. They are bitey though. Especially as a puppy, with sharp teeth. They bite. Not hard and not trying to hurt but that's how they try to tell you they want attention. That's gotten better as he's gotten older but still wants to put his mouth on your hand, but not hard. Just what the breed does.

He will be somewhere around 100lbs, He truly is a very good dog. Very smart, very friendly and very sweet.

ETA: he's strong as shite. Even at 8 mtgs old he's very strong.

Labs are great, closely followed by bernese mountain dogs. The mountain dogs are great. Great lovers but they are a little bit of a lug head with all due respect.

Lifespan is short for a dog that size also. But yeah Bernese are incredible dogs

All of my dogs were useless in that scenario. Think pitbull or my last mix, that identified as a pointer showing an intruder where everything is.

We’ve had a giant schnauzer for nearly 13 years. Female, about 80#. Great dog, very athletic and smart. Isn’t a “runner” and will stay by you when off-leash. Bonus is they don’t shed.

We had a wire fox terrier and he was a menace. A digger. And a runner. If he got loose, he hauled arse.

My lady friend (probably should marry) and I have our own homes.
Lady friend has to go for medical tests tomorrow.

Kiki is excited that she gets to come to Daddy’s house.

Humans suck compared to dogs.

Do you plan to work him? I have seen so many people buy a dog that’s intended to work and then not work them and get agravated when the (coonhound howls, cow dog chases everything and Terrier digs and on and on)
I have a choc lab and have used it for duck hunting and trailing deer but now he’s 12yr old now so he just lays around.

Had a client that had a giant schnauzer, it was trained to eat people on command. That dog was not a joke.

Not exactly sure what you’re looking for in a dog, but damn it’s hard to beat a beagle. I’ve had a few, just some backyard bred beagles that have been great.

Yes. We run dogs in JW Corbett WMA and sugar cane fields in South Florida.
