Looking for a Truck for Little Hammer. Seems like this is a pretty reliable vehicle. Looking to stay 15K or less and seems like you can find these for that price range actually a little less with less than 100,000 miles. Would have good safety features and not as popular as say a Tacoma or something.

Am I off the mark here?

Not at all.

Two things, don't buy from cold temp areas. Trucks that have repeatedly seen sub zero temp starts running the super thin factory oil will have light scoring on cylinder 7 walls.

If you can't bore scope the cylinder closest to the driver, start the truck, cold. You will mainly hear the annoying direct injection tick, that's normal. Almost sounds like a 7.3 diesel.

If you hear a sound like someone is beating a hammer on the left side of the motor, don't buy that one

Swap the oil to a 5w30 or mobil1 0w40. Do a few drain and fills on the transmission. The truck is bulletproof.

I use mobil1 in the engine with 10k oil changes.
I use valvoline full sun in the transmission and transfer case. Drain and fill every 30-40k miles. If I remember.
I use valvoline severe gear in the diffs.

If he keeps his foot out of it, he can get about 20 mpg. If he doesn't ... Prepare thy wallet.

Just want to add that 5.6 will RUN, keep that in mind

Good news is that unless you reflash it, it's almost impossible for him to do burnouts. Transmission tuning from the factory gives basically 25% power until you're doing 35 or so. If he's gonna haul any weight, ditch the factory pmetric tires for a 6 ply or greater.

Other good news, factory brakes are extremely over sized. Meaning you might change em every 75k miles even if you drive like a complete arse hat.

Lastly, I don't know what you're driving, but don't drive the titan.

What this man said ^^^
I have a 2018 with 157k on it and a 2015 Armada with 208k
Minus a few things here and there that were random and not huge mechanical issues, fingers crossed, I'd suggest the Titan to anyone. Most people think I'm crazy but it's been a solid truck!

I was looking really hard at getting a XD before they discontinued them. There is very few things to beat the Titan up on except dated design on the interior they don't hold resale well. But neither should concern you.

I would easily get one.

Replacing the entire center section with a giant Android unit does a lot for fixing the interior.

Edit: I would like to be able to point out things that you possibly should live for maintenance wise, but they're kind of isn't any. I mean I guess you could check for leaks and what not but there won't be any. And I guess you could maybe check the exhaust to see if maybe the manifolds are cracked, but that's kind of unlikely on a second gen. All your bearings and what not are Japanese or us made, so they'll still be fine. I actually still have my original hoses at 225,000 mi so nothing to really look at there.

I guess maybe you could check the coolant color in the expansion tank, you really want it to be blue. But I'm kind of struggling to think of things that you might need to look at

Just got rid of my 2018 Pro 4X. Never had a single issue out of that truck. The only thing was that it didnt get very good gas mileage but not many full size V8's do.

That's what I like about the Titan. Basic interior. I just want a v8 4x4 truck with a back up camera, power windows, and a radio. I don't need all that extra crap to break.

Thank you all VERY much for your replies. It pretty much tells me all I need to know that the OB can be in agreement on a truck post.

If we agree on rifle calibers next I’ll know the world is ending!!!

You all confirmed what my research told me. Will keep looking for the right one but looks like a Titan for little hammer.

The titan didn't fail because it was a bad truck, it failed because Nissan under rated the shite out of the towing/payload, refused to advertise, started the run with goofy two tone paint, and basically gave the work trucks the same infotainment as the platinum.

Sad part is if they would have held out two more years when every other manufacturer started to have issues, they might have sold more than 20k a year

If you do decide to lift it at all, either go really cheap or spend 3k on ICON, dirt king. The middle of the road stuff is meh.

If the kid wants an exhaust, the banks exhaust for the first gen titan, which they swear doesn't fit, bolts up just fine, it's... Spirited

Try to find a pro4x, it'll usually be optioned out with all seat heaters and AC in the front seats. The seats are zero grav. Once you get them set right, you can drive across the country without a numb arse.

I’ve owned two titans currently driving a 2024.

Some quick research would reveal common issues with it. The primary concerns are cylinder 7 and transmission services.

Loved my titans. Due diligence on independent inspections.

I would add, I bought my 17 knowing it had scoring. It was mid COVID and I used it to negotiate down to 15k OTD. Figured I'd put an engine in it for 5k.

That was 100k miles ago. The scoring looks exactly the same.

It will be making another cross country trip in a month. I might put a new belt on before the trip. Maybe. Problem is it has no cracks and looks great.

The only thing I can add is stay on top of keeping the paint waxed/protected. Nissan paint is terrible and the clearcoat will give out quickly.

I just bought a 2017 pro4x it had the cyl 7 issue and had a new short block at 149k. I couldn't pass up 14.5k for a 4x4 truck that looks brand new. Engine has a year warranty on it but Im not worried about it. When the warranty runs out I'll be using 5w30 oil. Its been a great truck for the month Ive owned it, will pull a crap ton and very good offroad. I need to do the mod so that you can use the locker in 2wd 4hi and 4lo. Also, the breather mod for the rear axle.I plan on doing the bilestine 5100 lift and havinging 34s on it. But for now the 275/70r18 nitro trail grapplers do real good.

Wife has a 2014 Armada with 265,000 miles. Just a few issues over the years. Solid!

As someone who has the 6100s and 5160s in the rear with dirt king arms, unless you're planning on jumping it, just go shitty rough country.

If you are going to jump it, the all dogs springs and 5160s are nice. They don't ride the best, but I've aired out a fullsize truck on the ramah levee road and landed no problem

Or...if a city example makes sense. Florida blvd, west bound. You can jump the tracks at 70 and land at the abandoned popeyes

Got a similar one with 225,000 miles on it but transmission fluid may not have been changed for 100,000 miles or so.

What’s the word on drain and flushes now or just stick with what’s in there?

Drain and fill is fine. I wouldn't power flush.

But with the transmission design, it takes like nine drain and fills to get above 99% new fluid.

Just do one every 10k for a while until the fluid looks new.

Nope. DK up top and I believe they put HD moog in the bottom.
