That’s a good point. Kind of like what I was saying earlier, longer and slower action will be better if you are popping cork fishing. 7’ med fast is probably a good happy medium

I think a 7’ Medium Fast for spinning and 7’ Medium Heavy for the bait casting rod gives more versatility. I have minimal use for a medium light in either when fishing inshore.

I'm considering getting both the BG2500 and BG3000 and the Daiwa Coastal. Maybe just get 2 rods for now and swap out the BGs as needed, knowing that I'd get a 3rd rod sooner than later.

2500 and 3000 aren’t going to be very different. 3000 will let you spool a bit more line or larger pound test which you may find valuable.

I agree I generally look at weight and drag lb strength. I'll always go with the lightest reel I can get away with if choosing between the two sizes with all else being equal

I have 3 battle II 3000’s on Daiwa coastal 7’0 rods and 2 battle II 2500’s on Penn Battle 6’6 rods. The smaller 2500’s are easier/lighter for my wife to handle.
I wanted a good saltwater bait cast and just recently bought a Shimano SLX150 DC. I fricking love it. I threw it on an abu silver max rod I had laying around. I plan to upgrade the rod at some point just haven’t decided what I want yet. I also have a couple older quantum and ambassador reels that I break out as spares.

Do not do baitcasters. For spinning try the Penn Battalion spinning rod with a 3500 Battle II spinning reel. The Shimano Nasci is also a good reel. I also have a Quantum S3 Smoke spinning rod that I like as well.

Save your money for the rod. Shimano, Lews, Daiwa... whatever is comfortable in your hand.

A medium light is the most popular if you’re trout fishing.

Shimano is all you need to know on reels. I still have everyone I have ever owned, all still working great

Shimano Calcutta on any quality rod have a few nicking on 20 years old and still smoothe as silk

I might find a different casting rod than a Dobyns Fury. I already have a MH fast action casting rod that I like. Thinking of looking for a M or ML for more finesse.
Thoughts?

Rods are funny, there is not standard to them. A medium light, medium, medium heavy from 3 different brands might all feel the same, you have to go and touch them!
I think rods over 7ft are unruly, but I am also short, really short if you follow the latest OT thread on height. I like my casting rods between 6ft-6.5ft and most of my spinning rods are 7ft, but I also set those up for guest to chunk popping corks as far as they can.
I personally wouldn't skimp on the rods like some suggested, I think the rod is more important than the reel, but I also wouldn't buy a reel under the Daiwa BG, Penn Battle line of reels. Again, the Daiwa baitcast are my favorite, either a Tatula or Coastal series. The brakes are fantastic.

ML (St Croix) is all I use for trout and reds unless I’m fishing docks. You’ll find that the rod does a lot more of the fighting and the drag is used less. And it’s just more fun. I use a medium around docks just to get them out of the pilings.

I am a shimano guy, but the Lew's CI400 Custom Inshore Spinning Reel is pretty awesome for what you are suggesting and we’ll below your price range, even with a great rod.

I try to buy their US made models but I have a little bit of everything. In their reasonably priced lines there are basically 2 blanks, what they call an SC II and an SC III. All the other differences are guides, grips, etc. I use their freshwater models in salt water and vice versa; I just pay attention to the lure weight.
All that said, in ML I have a salt Avid (SC III) and a MM Tidemaster (SC II). The two rods are really, really similar despite the different power rating. They discontinued the Tidemaster but they have a Mojo Inshore if you want cheaper/made in Mexico and an Avid if you want made in the US. For a medium fast I really like the Mojo Yak line, but they don’t offer a ML in that.

I really like Castaway Taranis rods. You can usually search up a 20% off coupon for their website. I have all brands of reels but I feel my Shimanos are the best.

It is a baitcaster reel built kinda on the same frame as the old school Curados but it has some kind of chip built into it that basically prevents it from backlashing. It's pretty damn idiot proof. I heard Shimano builds a much more expensive brand for their Asian market and dialed this one back to around $200 for the US market. It is legit.
