Looking at getting one of each, including rods. Between $400-$600 total ($750 max). Mainly targeting specks and redfish. Might use for some light bass fishing also.

Go.

Daiwa BG would be a great spinning option for your price range. It’s a home run for $110 or so.

7 ft G Loomis E6x rods both spinning and casting

Shimano 3000 Spheres, NASCI, or Stradic
spinning reel

Baitcaisting reel - Shimano, Lew's, or Daiwa you like the best. I have generally fished Shimano Curados but the other two brands are putting out good reels as well.

I've been using Cabela's Salt Striker reels on my trips to Bahamas for about 8 years now. They're tough as hell -- been dropped in the surf, on rocks, beat to hell and back. I originally bought 2 about 8 years ago, then one 2 years later and a fourth one about 2 years after that -- they all still work great. I use them for freshwater too, so they get quite a bit of use. I think they've all been rebranded as BASS Pro Shops labeled reels now.

i've been looking at these. Sounds like the reels run large for their size compared to other brands. What size would be recommended? I prefer the smallest I can get away with. Was looking at the BG2500 or BG3000.

I'm not the type of person to just put 14lb mono on everything regardless of what i'm throwing. I'd like to throw the lightest line possible and utilize the drag properly. Would likely use braid with fluoro leaders except for when using a popping cork.

I would never spend 1/3 of that on a saltwater setup unless it’s an offshore rig.

Get a penn battle and a mid level shimano baitcaster and spend the rest of that $ on cold beer and steaks.

Take proper care and you can get a lot of life out a good rod and reel. I have rods and reels that are 15yrs +. I don't skimp on quality and am careful to keep my gear in good shape. I don't transport rods in the back of the truck or anything like that.

so, you wouldn't spend:

$100 - baitcaster
$100 - casting rod
$100 - spinning reel
$100 - spinning rod

$400 for all 4 isn't really a high budget.

I have Daiwa BG 2500's and Penn Battle 2 2500's, they are almost identical in size, I can't tell the difference. They are great for trout and handle reds just fine.

I also use Daiwa baitcast reels, Tatula's are great, I really like the coastal models though. For spinning rods I use Star Inshore Stellar lite rods, they are $99 with a lifetime no questions asked over the counter warranty. I am still searching for that baitcast rod to recommend.

I used 2500 almost exclusively for fresh water. I would bump up to 3000 for salt. Nothing greater than 3000 needed for inshore.

I’ve read solid reviews on Daiwa Coastal BC.

I have the 2500 and use it inshore.

For a baitcaster I like the Daiwa Coastal SV, but there are other good options.

ETA if that’s your budget for 2 rigs I’d get the BG and a Coastal and skimp on the rods. I have some nice rods that I use inshore, but it’s not as if you need the sensitivity like you would with plastics and base. Definitely go with nicer reels and cheaper rods.

i know reading the specs it feels like a huge difference but there really isnt that much of a difference. this is my bg2500 on the left and my 3500 on the right.

I've only had penn battles, battle 2s, bgs, and a few lower end shimano spinning reels. the rods ive used that I liked were a cajun custom savanna, dobyns fury, some temple fork, 13 green rods.

for casting in that range ive used some different 13 concept reels, lews mach crush, shimano curado K, ive used the kast king reels on amazon. My favorite is the curado K. I have it on a cajun custom atled that i really like but thats probably going to stretch the budget.

Im not an expert fisherman and i havent used them all but with $750, id get a bg 3000 on a dobyns fury and a curado k on a dobyns fury and use my extra $250 on gas and lures.

i was kind of leaning towards a BG2500 and either Dawai Coastal or Curado K. Anywhere around Baton Rouge to see a BG2500 and BG3000 in person to compare? I haven't found them anywhere.

and for the rods: what length, power, action would you recommend?

For the money BGs are tough to beat. I have both a 2500 on a 6'7" ml falcon coastal "the grinder" filled with 12 lb mono for she pups and mirrodines and a 3000 on a med falcon on a 7'"med popper split" filled with 15 lb braid for popping corks. Love them both, but upper slot reds can get tricky on the med light rod. Also, have a curado 71 mgl on the same ml falcon rod filled with 30 lb braid for paddle tails; again great for trout, but reds get tricky.
Admittedly, I have too many inshore setups bc I also have 2 stradics on TFO tac inshore rods which are awesome, but more expensive.

I usually get 7’ or less in medium fast or a medium heavy fast. You can get a longer one and cast further but the long ones get too flimsy for me and they’ll hit the water if you ever fish with your rod tip down to walk a top water or something. Long and flimsy isn’t really a bad thing if you fish with a popping cork a lot. Somebody who bass fishes may consider what I’m saying sacreligious. I pretty much only care about reds specks flounder and sheepshead.

Online is showing some 3000s at the academy on seigen. Superior is close to that as well but I’m not sure if they carry bg.

I'm usually the opposite

7-7'6" Medium Fast or Medium Moderate spinning

6'6"-7' Medium or Medium Light fast action or moderate in baitcaisting rod
