How hard can you safely run your motor on the ear muffs?

I usually keep it under 2500 rpms, maybe Rev it every now and again but should you push it? Could you run it harder in a 55 gal drum?

The muff is only as good as the lips that are on it

I thought I was for idle only because you didn’t want the prop to spin with no resistance or load. Not sure though.

Sorry, have never heard it referred to as 'muffs'. I've always called it a water hose gadget attachment thingy.

It you want to run it with the prop spinning you need to, at a minimum, put the lower end in a garage can full of water

ya, no. as soon as you put it in gear, even at idle, the water will be thrown out to the point its cavitating

Even though the water pump does circulate water throughout the engine, outboards also rely heavily upon forward movement to help force water throughout the cooling system. Being on the muffs with just household water pressure is not enough to circulate fresh water throughout the motor at higher RPMs.

In other words. Keep it at idle.

Wouldn't that be a "hose pipe" gadget attachment thingy ?

Idle only and run it long enough to were the Tstat opens. You can tell by feeling the discharge water temp.

Just keep the hose in the trashcan...

So it sounds like if I want to run hard and long I need a load, not muffs?

J/k, long story short...my f40 is having the exact same issue it did 4+ years ago which ended up requiring a fuel pump kit. Warranty expired 2 months ago...I wanted to try and recreate the issue, but it only occurs if you run it for 30 minutes or so on the water. Took 2 trips to dealer last time, because the 5 minutes they run it at that shop, they thought it was fine.

Suppose I could back down the ramp and run it on the trailer.

You can’t load the engine up so it doesn’t really matter.

I've had a 70 in a trash can before. It splashes water out sporadically, but not all at once. Keep the hose in it and it'll be fine, even a little over idle.
