Question about sodding a lawn with weeds

Moved into our house end of August last year. The builder sodded the front, sides, and a few rows in the back yard, but the rest was dirt. Fast forward almost a year, and it's covered with weeds, crabgrass, etc.
As a present for our upcoming engagement, my gf's uncle told us he's going to buy us sod to lay in the back. He has laid a lot of sod in almost every house they lived it and told me I could just lay it over the weeds in the back and it isn't necessary to clear out the back.
My question here is if I just water the back prior to sodding and make it soft, then water after sodding and roll, I should be fine right? If it helps, I mowed it on the lowest setting, so they're pretty dried out now.
I know TL,DR. Basically, sod over existing weeds without removing, yay or nay?

Spread some weed and feed back there and kill them.

for best results spray weeds with round up...twice, then till and rake up weeds, level dirt then put sod out. A lot of work but that will give you the best most weed free lawn. If you were to just lay sod on the weeds it would do okay, but you will have a lot more weeds in your yard...Do not do like what was previously suggested and put out weed n feed, you should not fertilize newly laid sod

spray with a weed killer. wait a week and then lay sod.

agreed, roundup is the best approach. You will be pissed if you see the weeds coming through the sod. Plus freshly laid sod takes a few weeks to get going and the weeds would probably thrive.

I agree with the killing and tilling. Also, you'll need to water the absolute crap out of the sod once it's laid.

Kill, Till, Fill and Sod

Definately kill the weeds but if you don't want to till go over with some sand before you lay the sod and you will be fine.

Everyone is saying to till, but if I just spray the weeds and kill them then cover with sand (which Bermuda loves anyways) will I be fine?

yes, just put a 1/2 inch or so layer of sand down and you will be fine.

Spray than till, if you don't you will always regret it!

So I just sprayed some Round Up on the weeds in the back. Hopefully that'll kill them all cause I'm tired of digging them up by hand

obviously, the most sure fire route would be to spray and till once the weeds are dead...
however, I am not sure I would get quite that energetic...I would spray the area with roundup and lay the sod over it once dead...if in the country, I might try to burn the dead weeds off after they are dead...

This. I'll add to make sure the soil is flat after raking the weeds. You can top coat and fill holes with topsoil/compost. Any holes/mounds will come through the sod. Don't think they'll get covered up.

That's probably what I end up doing.

If time allows spray with round up and wait for the weeds to die. I got anxious and laid my sod and the weeds started coming through the cracks. After a couple years of weed and feed they are under control but I definately wished I would have killed them first

I would add that putting down a pre emergent weed killer could also be of some benefit...

quote:"Could" also do a lot of harm. Be careful which one you add and how long you wait before laying the sod.
